CHAMPLAIN — Jacob Perkins was a workhorse on the hill Saturday, pitching nine innings in all, while getting a win, save and totaling 23 strikeouts, leading the hosts to the championship in the Northeastern Clinton Wooden Bat Tournament.
The Cougars won the title with a 3-1 victory over Chazy. Moriah was a 6-5 winner over AuSable Valley in the consolation game.
The semifinals had NCCS edging out a 2-1 win over AuSable Valley and Chazy a walk-off 4-3 victory over Moriah.

Winning pitcher Perkins took over in relief with nobody out in the opening inning and went seven shutout innings as he struck out 19 and allowed one hit to only one over the minimum.
“Jacob Perkins had his A game on the mound, getting us out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the first inning with a run already in,” NCCS coach Jeff Norton said.
“We had better at-bats this game and threatened to score more frequently. We have to find a way to come up with the big hit in those situations. Chazy’s pitching and defense was strong, keeping the game close right up to the end.”
Perkins also had two of the four Cougars’ hits, including a triple.
Jack Demers accounted for the lone Eagles’ hit.

Hayden Schad’s two-run single in the fifth inning, which gave the Cougars the lead, was the biggest blow of the game.
Winning pitcher Robert McIntyre went five innings for the win and struck out nine. Perkins picked up the save, striking out four over the final two innings in what was also a CVAC league game.
Losing pitcher Gavin Richards tossed 4.2 innings and struck out 11.
“This game was a pitcher’s duel throughout, with all pitchers keeping hitters off balance most of the game,” Norton said.
McIntyre’s double was one of two hits for NCCS. Dashnaw’s double and single were two of the four Patriots’ hits.
