Dr. Howie Peebles, a retired dentist, was honored for his volunteer work at Stone Elementary School during the December meeting of the Cumberland County Board of Education.
Peebles is now a regular at the school, said Principal Stephanie Barnes.
“He volunteers in many ways to help enrich our students’ education and shape a positive learning environment as well as bringing joy to our staff by supporting and spoiling them with treats,” Barnes said.
Peebles said time spent with teachers and students is “never wasted.”
“I’ve been lucky in retirement to drop in to Stone Elementary every now and then to help out,” Peebles said. “I’m being educated still, every day.”
Peebles reads with kindergarten students, chaperones field trips and gives presentations on dental health and, as an avid beekeeper, on bees and their importance in the environment. He also works at special concession event where he donates treats for students. He helps in the cafeteria during holiday meals.
“He is referred to as the ‘pie pusher’ by our cafeteria staff,” Barnes said.
He sponsors the Coffee Cart for teachers and donates gifts and treats for the Sunshine Committee during the 12 Days of Christmas and Teacher Appreciation Week events.
“Dr. Peebles is always willing to help out whenever and wherever he is needed,” Barnes said. “The impact of his volunteerism resonates far and wide within our school. It is volunteers like him who exemplify the spirit and generosity and community engagement, serving as an inspiration to others.”
The Kids First award, presented each month, recognizes the contributions of these individuals to the school system.
