NEWBURYPORT — A fixture on the city’s boardwalk since 2003, the Peace Garden was established by the Women’s Action for New Directions and is dedicated to those who lost their lives on both sides of the Iraq War. It is located on property owned by the Newburyport Waterfront Trust.
For the past 20 years, Joanna Hammond has organized community volunteers to plant and help maintain the Peace Garden for all to enjoy. This year, Hammond turned this responsibility over to the PEG Center, a Newburyport-based grassroots organization for social and environmental justice through art, advocacy and community engagement.
PEG Center volunteers also support local vegetable gardens for donations to food pantries.
