BUFFALO — “Travels With George: A Journey Through Depression, Connection, and Friendship,” a documentary about a friendship that transcends differences, will air on PBS at 3:05 p.m. Monday, 5:30 p.m. Feb. 15 and 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 27.
The film follows Dan Lukasik, a local attorney, and his mentee George Tillmon, whose relationship began through mentorship and grew into a lifelong friendship. Despite their differences in background, age, and life experience, Dan and George’s bond demonstrates the transformative power of connection, trust, and showing up for one another. Over a 10-year relationship with George, whom he met at St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy, Dan found unexpected healing from his own battle with depression.
“Travels With George” was made in collaboration with Compeer, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing loneliness and improving mental wellness by connecting people into meaningful, supportive friendships. The documentary features Compeer founder Bunny Skirboll and CEO Cheri Alvarez, whose leadership reflects the organization’s longstanding belief that friendship itself can be a powerful tool for healing and mental wellness. In addition, the film includes an interview with Georgette Hughes, George’s mother, and Jean Marinaro, a missionary at St. Luke’s Mission, which serves as the story’s backdrop.
“Travels With George” tells a deeply human story: that when people are given the opportunity to connect, without judgment or expectation, lasting friendships can form and lives can change. This philosophy mirrors Compeer’s mission to intentionally bring people together and create space for relationships that foster joy, resilience, and mutual support.
“Dan and George’s story beautifully captures what Compeer has always stood for,” said Cheri Alvarez, CEO of Compeer. “Friendship can bridge differences, reduce isolation, and remind us that none of us are meant to navigate life alone.”
