It’s a repeat for the Oneonta girls.
A standout performance at a top local track and field meet has made Oneonta’s Cassidy Howard the second Yellowjacket in a row to win The Daily Star’s Athlete of the Week Award.
Howard, a junior sprinter, set two meet records at Sidney’s Doug Quinney Invitational on May 15. She ran the 100 in 12.36 and the 200 in 25.06. She was also part of the 400-relay team, with Kaylee Fererra, Keiyra Morton and Edyn Aiyermo, which set a meet record, at 50.98.
Oneonta sophomore Jenevie Gallusser won the Athlete of the Week Award for the week ending May 9. Howard followed up her great week May 16 with section titles in the 100, 200, and with her 400-relay team on May 28 in Newark Valley.
The Athlete of the Week nominations for the week of May 17-May 23 are:
Dejah Taylor, Sidney track and field: Taylor, a senior sprinter, won a handful of Midstate Athletic Conference titles on May 20 in Sidney. She won the 200 in 25.98 and the 400 in 59.20. She was also part of the winning 400-relay team with Shannon Crowley, Brooke Grow and Ayla Gronwall, which finished in 52.64.
Evelyn Rhodes, Laurens/Milford track and field: Rhodes, a Milford sophomore, also won a handful of track titles, in her case at the Tri-Valley League championship on May 21 in Sidney. She won the 1,500 in 5:09.01 and the 3,000 in 11:08.95. Laurens/Milford also won the 1,600 relay with a team of Katie Bellen, Sierra Beecher, Courtney McCarthy and Rhodes, which finished in 4:47.12.
Harper Folts, Edmeston/Morris softball: Folts, a sophomore at Edmeston, had a big game in E/M’s Tri-Valley League championship win over Richfield Springs/Owen D. Young in Sidney on May 18. Folts went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Isaiah Hampton, Bainbridge-Guilford track and field: Hampton, a senior sprinter/jumper, also won three MAC titles on May 20. He took first in the 100 in 11.22, then won the high jump with a best of 5-10 and the long jump with a best of 21-09.5.
Nolan Stark, Oneonta baseball: Stark, a senior, had an amazing week leading the Yellowjackets on their way to a section title. He pitched a five-inning perfect game against Spencer Van-Etten/Candor in the opening-round win May 22 at Joe Hughes Field. He also had two home runs, including one inside the park, and four RBI.
Bodie Jordan, Unatego/Franklin track and field: Jordan, a freshman at Unatego, had a dominant run at the TVL track and field championships on May 21. He won the 800 in 2:07.55, the 1,600 in 4:50.72 and the 3,200 in 10:46.33.
