The CVS Pharmacy chain plans on closing 271 of its locations nationwide over the course of 2025, with one Niagara County location already impacted.
Its location in North Tonawanda’s Mid-City Plaza at 955 Payne Ave. closed on April 11, one of five so far in New York state that has already closed or will close as part of restructuring efforts.
In its annual report released late last month, the company announced the closures are part of its “enterprise-wide restructuring plan intended to streamline and simply the organization,” according to Newsweek.
In a statement, CVS Pharmacy’s Communication Director Amy Thibault provided to Spectrum News, that all the prescriptions from that pharmacy have been transferred to the 1717 Sheridan Dr. location in Tonawanda. Employees were offered comparable roles within the company.
“Maintaining access to pharmacy services in the communities we serve is an important factor we consider when making store decisions,” Thibault said in that statement. “Other factors include local market dynamics, population shifts, a community’s store density, and ensuring there are other geographic access points to meet the needs of the community. We’ll continue to provide area residents with outstanding service at our Tonawanda store.”
This has happened as Rite Aid plans on closing all 12 of its Niagara County locations on Wednesday, including two in North Tonawanda. Other pharmacies still operating in the city limits include Walgreens, Walmart, and the independent Wurlitzer Family Pharmacy.
CVS currently has three stores in Niagara County — Niagara Falls, Sanborn, and Lewiston. The company has closed at least 600 locations nationwide since 2022.
The other four New York CVS locations on the closure list are in the Albany and New York City areas.
