The North Shore Amateur celebrated its 50th year of competition last summer, and this week, it’s back for another go at it.
A summer golf staple in the area for decades now, the 36-hole stroke play event will once again be held at the beautiful Far Corner Golf in Boxford, with the opening round teeing off on Tuesday morning. The field will then be cut down to the low 40 scores plus ties, with a champion officially crowned on Wednesday afternoon.
Golfers will tee it up from the championship tees, with the original ‘Fox’ and ‘Heron’ nines being utilized and tipping out at over 6,600 yards.
The tournament — which was founded by the late Bill Flynn and originally played at Thomson Country Club in North Reading before moving to Far Corner full time in 1980— will once again operate with a heavy heart following the passing of beloved owner Bob Flynn last winter. Second-year head golf professional Mark Mangion is thrilled to keep the tradition alive, and has purchased a special trophy to give to this year’s winner.
“We’ve got about 59 golfers this year which is a very solid field,” said Mangion. “I got my feet wet with (the tournament) last year and we’re excited to be bringing it back again.”
Reigning champion Shuvam Bhaumik, who carded an impressive 3-under par 69 in his final round last year to capture the crown, will be back to defend his title this week. Manchester Essex standout Matt DeOreo is one of many talented linksman who will aim to dethrone Bhaumik with strong play at the challenging track.
