CHARLESTON, W.Va. — No. 5 Frankfort pitched and fielded its way to a pair of shutouts to begin the Howard Daniels Invitational at Capital High School on Friday.
Frankfort (8-5), 4-0 this week, opened the proceedings with a 6-0 win over Riverside and followed it up with a 4-0 triumph against Hurricane — ranked No. 4 in this week’s WVMetroNews Class AAA state power rankings.
Frankfort did not commit an error or issue a free pass across 14 innings.
Carson Durst threw seven shutout innings of five-hit ball against Riverside, striking out eight and walking none.
Blake Jacobs (Charleston signee) doubled and drove in a pair, and Durst also had two RBIs.
Lanson Orndorf (Charleston signee) outdid his teammate in the nightcap, holding Hurricane to no runs on just three hits in seven frames. The right-hander fanned eight and walked none.
Jacobs doubled again as part of a 2-for-3 game, and Cole Shanholtz singled twice.
Hurricane’s Ryan Bowman and Tyler Baxter doubled.
Brayden Dunkley was tabbed with the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.
The Falcons take on Ripley on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Capital.
No. 2 Allegany 4, Broadfording 3
CUMBERLAND — No. 2 Allegany recorded a much-needed victory Friday, fending off Broadfording to end a four-game skid.
The Campers (7-5) won the contest on a double play started by right-handed pitcher Kohen Madden, who notched a complete game. The junior allowed three unearned runs on six hits in seven innings with five strikeouts and three walks.
Allegany trailed 2-0 before Cole Ricker tied the game on a two-run single in the third, and Madden followed with a run-scoring double.
Eston Powell added an RBI double in the fourth, his second two-bagger of the proceedings.
Ricker and Powell both recorded two hits.
David Estevez was dealt the loss in a complete-game effort for Broadfording. He allowed four runs on six hits in six innings with four strikeouts and four walks.
Angel Perez singled twice to lead the Broadfording offense.
Allegany (2-2 Western Maryland Athletic Conference) heads to Southern (6-6, 2-4 WestMAC) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Petersburg 4, Southern 3
OAKLAND — Petersburg was down to its final out with the tying run standing at first, but Payton Metheny brought him in and then some.
Metheny blasted a go-ahead two-run home run to center field, and the Vikings came from behind to defeat Southern on Friday.
The sophomore right-hander retired the side in order in the seventh with two strikeouts to finish off his complete game. Metheny struck out 11 across seven frames, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk.
Southern’s Ryan Bird was dealt the loss on the mound. The righty gave up four runs on four hits in 6 2/3 frames with 12 strikeouts to two walks.
Bird drove in two runs to lead the Rams’ offense.
Southern (6-6) hosts No. 2 Allegany on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Petersburg (5-8) hosts No. 4 Fort Hill (7-2-1) on Monday at 6 p.m.
East Hardy 4, South Harrison 0
LOST CREEK, W.Va. — East Hardy was out-hit 3-2, but it beat South Harrison where it counts Friday in the McDonald’s Classic.
The Cougars (9-3) rode six shutout innings from Gage Dove, who tossed six innings of two-hit ball with eight strikeouts and two walks. Evan Hamilton slammed the door with a scoreless seventh.
East Hardy took advantage of eight South Harrison walks and four errors.
Dove tripled, Shayne Sisler doubled, Hamilton walked three times and Sisler scored twice.
Madden Maxwell and Jaxon Anderson combined to hold East Hardy to one earned run on two hits in seven innings.
East Hardy continues the McDonald’s Classic Saturday at East Fairmont High School, facing Herbert Hoover at 10 a.m. and Lincoln at noon.
Keyser 5, North Marion 3
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Keyser scored three runs in the fourth inning Friday in a come-from-behind win over North Marion in the McDonald’s Classic at Robert C. Byrd.
The Golden Tornado (4-10) trailed 3-2 entering the fourth. That changed following a Cam Larkin single that tied things up, a go-ahead RBI groundout by Lucas Williamson and a passed ball that plated an insurance run.
Williamson was the winning arm, allowing three runs on five hits in seven complete innings. He fanned eight and issued one free pass.
Owen Rotruck drove in two runs for the Tornado, and Larkin singled twice.
North Marion’s Collin Verbosky was the losing pitcher. Ryder Bland doubled, and Jacob Kucish went 2 for 3 with two ribbies.
Keyser is at No. 5 Frankfort (8-5) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
