CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Sammy Scritchfield scored five goals, as No. 5 Calvary cruised to a 5-0 road victory against Cumberland Valley on Tuesday.
Cumberland Valley battled the unbeaten Eagles (8-0-1) to a 2-1 defeat on Aug. 22 in Cresaptown, but Calvary led 4-0 at the half in the rematch.
Scritchfield opened the scoring at the 16-minute mark, netting a goal off of an assist from Jake MacGray that was slid between a few defenders to Scritchfield inside the 18. He placed the shot to the top right of the goal.
Calvary went up 2-0 at the 31-minute mark when Luke Kamauf fed a pinpoint cross from the left side to Scritchfield, who was sprinting to the ball and beat the keeper for an easy tap-in.
At the 36-minute mark, Scritchfield placed a free kick from 25 yards out into the top left of goal.
Scritchfield’s fourth goal of the half came at the 39-minute mark as MacGray delivered a cross to Scritchfield, who drilled it from the 18.
In the second half at the 14-minute mark, Silas Leith had a free kick from the far left midfield that found Scritchfield at the far post for the striker’s fifth goal.
Calvary head coach David Ziler got everyone in the game, and the defense held strong to preserve the cleansheet.
A strong defense consisting of Gerald Mihailovich, Chais Murphy, Silas Leith, Jake Zewatsky and keeper Peyton Poland “had an awesome game keeping Cumberland Valley out of the goal,” assistant coach Bill Scritchfield said.
Poland made 10 saves, and Cumberland Valley’s Quinten Cooper had seven stops.
Calvary outshot Cumberland Valley, 14-11, and led in corner kicks, 11-0.
Calvary heads to No. 2 Mountain Ridge (2-2-1) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
