CUMBERLAND — No. 4 Fort Hill overcame a 6-1 hole to beat Mountain Ridge, 7-6, Saturday on a walk-off by Brady O’Neal.
O’Neal’s game-winner plated Carson Bender, who reached in the bottom of the seventh on a lead-off single.
Three straight Mountain Ridge errors in the sixth allowed Fort Hill (1-0-1) to score three runs and tie the game.
Bobby Brauer led the Sentinel lineup going 3 for 4 with three doubles and three runs scored. Jake Rice and Coye Resh had two RBIs apiece, and Bender singled twice.
Resh picked up the win with a scoreless seventh inning. Brauer was dealt a no-decision after he allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits in six frames. He struck out 10 and walked five.
Mountain Ridge (0-2) was paced by Delaware commit John Delaney, who went 3 for 3 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Carter Clites had two hits and two RBIs out of the No. 9 hole.
Delaney got the start and had a no decision. He surrendered five runs (two earned) on nine hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk in 5 1/3 innings.
Carver Robeson was tabbed with the loss in relief.
Mountain Ridge hosts Southern (1-0) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Fort Hill (1-0 Western Maryland Athletic Conference) hosts Northern (0-1 WestMAC) on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
No. 1 Frankfort 9, Hedgesville 1
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — Top-ranked Frankfort bounced back from a season-opening loss with a rout of Hedgesville on Saturday.
The Falcons (1-1) trailed 1-0 before breaking the game open with a six-run third inning.
Jaxon Hare made sure that run support was plenty, allowing an unearned run on three hits in 5 2/3 frames to pick up the win. The right-hander struck out three and walked two.
Rhett Sensabaugh threw 1 1/3 scoreless frames of relief, fanning a pair.
Frankfort’s leading hitters were Cole Shanholtz with a triple, Blake Jacobs (Charleston signee) with a double, single, two RBIs and two runs, Carson Durst with a double, single and two runs, and Lanson Orndorf (Charleston signee) with a double.
Bryan French was tabbed with the loss for Hedgesville, though just two of his eight runs were earned. He allowed seven hits in four innings with six Ks and a walk.
Aiden Eichelberger drove in Hedgesville’s lone run.
Frankfort is at Keyser (1-0) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Hampshire 3-1, Robert C. Byrd 2-11
ROMNEY, W.Va. — Hampshire split an opening-day twinbill with Robert C. Byrd Saturday, winning an eight-inning thriller and falling by run rule in Game 2.
The Trojans (1-1) trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh in the first contest.
Channing Wilt drew a leadoff walk, Brayden Hott bunted him to second and Landon Whitacre notched the tying RBI single one batter later to force extra innings.
After a three-up, three-down inning by Zeke McDonald, Wilt pushed across the winning run with a walk-off sacrifice fly.
Hampshire pitching held Robert C. Byrd to two runs on four hits across eight innings. Mark Richman got the start and allowed two runs on three hits in four frames. Wilt tossed three shutout innings of one-hit of middle relief.
Xavier Carvelli tripled for RCB, and Cooper Floyd doubled. Anderson Levake took the loss in relief.
The Eagles took the second game in five frames, scoring four runs in the first, three in the second and two in both the fourth and fifth innings to win 11-1.
Landon Whitacre took the loss for Hampshire.
RCB’s Ashton Shaffer went 3 for 3 and scored twice.
Hampshire is at Moorefield (1-0) on Monday at 6 p.m.
