ACCIDENT — No. 3 Northern exploded for nine runs over the final two innings to secure an 11-1, six-inning rout of Southern on Tuesday.
The Huskies (11-5) secured at least a share of the Western Maryland Athletic Conference title with a 6-2 league mark. Allegany is 4-2.
Landon Yoder walked it off with an RBI single with one out in the sixth, securing the mercy rule margin. Northern plated three runs in the frame and six in the fifth.
Yoder pitched a gem on the mound to earn the win, allowing a run on six hits in six innings with six strikeouts to no walks.
Northern’s Jake Chambers blasted a grand slam in the fifth, Gavin Maust had three hits, Blake Spiker had two hits and two ribbies, and Yoder recorded two hits.
Southern (8-9, 2-6 WestMAC) was paced at the plate by Ryan Bird, who was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Hayden Williams was the losing pitcher.
Northern hosts Albert Gallatin on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Southern is at Tucker County on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Moorefield 1, Petersburg 0
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Moorefield’s Mathew Iman stranded the tying and winning runs in scoring position to finish off his complete-game win over Petersburg Tuesday.
With the Yellow Jackets (10-6) clinging to a 1-0 lead entering the seventh, Petersburg’s Broty Sites singled and an error put two on with nobody out.
Iman pitched a strikeout, and a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. Iman induced a fly out to center field for the win.
Iman tossed seven shutout innings of five-out ball, striking out five and walking none.
Moorefield’s Blake Snyder tripled and drove in the game’s lone run.
Petersburg’s Payton Metheny was dealt the loss in a gem of his own. The right-hander allowed an unearned run on two hits in six innings. He struck out 11 and walked three.
Petersburg (7-12) is at Berkeley Springs on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
Moorefield has a doubleheader at Tygarts Valley on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
