FROSTBURG — Concord’s Tyler Mizzell entered Bobcat Stadium as one of the nation’s top passers — that was before he met the Frostburg State secondary.
The Bobcats limited the gunslinger to 10 of 33 passing for just 86 yards and an interception, and Frostburg State rolled to a 33-7 rout of Concord on Saturday in Homecoming.
Frostburg State, ranked No. 23 nationally in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25, is 5-0 for the second straight year. The Bobcats started last season 6-0 before dropping five in a row to end the campaign.
Frostburg is one of three unbeaten teams remaining in Mountain East Conference play. Its 3-0 mark is a half-game ahead of Charleston and Wheeling, both 2-0.
The Bobcats led 7-0 after the first quarter, 20-0 at the half and 27-7 after three quarters.
Frostburg State’s defense held Concord (2-3, 1-2 MEC) to a paltry 1 for 17 on third downs and forced seven punts. Carter Mazalewski led the unit with 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Wylan Harich intercepted a pass.
KJ Smothers was the Bobcats’ leading ground gainer with 89 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Owen Doyle added 14 totes for 88 yards and a score.
Frostburg’s Jordan Brooks handily outplayed his counterpart under center, connecting on 14 of 23 passes for 187 yards, one touchdown and an interception.
Cruis Paul-Umstead caught an 11-yard score, and Tra’Shaun Timmons hauled in three passes for 59 yards.
Concord wideout Dom Collins, a West Virginia University transfer, entered Saturday third nationally in receiving yards with 554, but the Bobcats limited him to one reception for 25 yards.
Frostburg State hosts Glenville State (2-3, 1-1 MEC) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
