CUMBERLAND — Top-ranked Allegany completed its undefeated regular season Thursday, defeating No. 4 Southern, 3-1, at Greenway Avenue Stadium.
The Campers finished their regular slate 12-0-2, the program’s fourth unbeaten campaign joining the 2004, ’05 and ’07 teams under Bob Langan, which finished unblemished before falling in the postseason.
“Going undefeated in the regular season says so much about this team’s work ethic, discipline and belief in each other,” Allegany head coach Andy Farrell said. “Every single player bought into what we set out to do, and they showed up for one another through all the ups and downs of the season.
“We now have some time to rest and heal up and carry this momentum into the playoffs. I’m incredibly proud of these young ladies, and I know they are proud of each other.”
After a scoreless first half, Allegany struck first when Harper Farrell throw-in into the back of the net in the 52nd minute.
All three Camper goals came off throw-ins, the second unassisted by Miller in the 57th minute, and the third off another Miller to Farrell connection in the 75th minute.
Southern got on the scoreboard with two minutes to go via an Emily Sweitzer unassisted score — making the Rams just the third team to score on Allegany this year.
Alco keeper Brilynn Beatty made nine saves, and Southern’s Abi Teets had 11. The Campers had a 20-15 edge in shots and 14-10 margin in shots on goal, and the Rams had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Allegany did get some bad news this week, as freshman star Madalyn Bucy, the area’s leading goal scorer, has been ruled out for 9-12 months with a torn ACL and meniscus.
The Campers have secured the top seed in the Class 1A West Region I playoffs.
Southern (7-5-1) concludes its regular season at home against Clear Spring on Saturday at 11 a.m.
