DANVILLE — Sophomore guard Josh Hines scored all 16 of his points in the first half as the Macomb Community College Monarchs cruised into the quarterfinals with an 77-48 victory over the Johnson County Cavaliers in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament at the Mary Miller Center.
Hines was one of three players in double figures for the sixth-seeded Monarchs. Joining him were Jotham Nweke with 16 and Marlon Williams had 13.
Johnson County, the National Champions in 2001 and 2009, were led in scoring by Steven Samuels with 13, while Gavin Harvey had 11. The Cavaliers (29-5) shot just 33.3 percent (9-of-27) in the first half and they were 21-of-61 for the game.
Macomb (28-5) advances to play the winner of Tuesday’s game between third-seeded Kirkwood and 14th-seeded Kansas City Kansas in a quarterfinal contest on Wednesday.
