Niagara University had a special theme for a special visitor.
In an exhibition game against the USA Hockey National Development Team Friday, both teams and the referees wore SkateSkins designed by patients of Oishei Children’s Hospital. Each child’s work was incorporated into the final design.
Artists were treated as special guests for the game and participated in a ceremonial puck drop at the start. After the game, the game-worn SkateSkins will be auctioned with proceeds benefiting the hospital and its foundation.
SkateSkins is a Buffalo-based company that allows the outside layer of ice skates to be removed and designed at the whim of the owner. The NTDP is a program for the nation’s best under-18 players in the country based in Plymouth, Michigan. Notable alumni include Patrick Kane and Auston Matthews.
Niagara won 4-1.
