Niagara Falls officials have announced plans to mill and repave more than two dozen city streets this summer.
Mayor Robert Restaino made the announcement Monday and said work on the repaving is expected to begin in the next two to three weeks, subject to weather and Department of Public Works/Parks crews finishing up pothole repairs.
“I think with these 25 roads, in this season, we’ll have paved about 160 roads between 2021 and 2026,” the mayor said.
Restaino said he expects the city to spend about $5 million on this year’s repaving projects. That money will come from a combination of Community Development Block Grant funding, New York State Department of Transportation State Touring Route allocations and a local matching contribution.
All of the projects will involve milling and repaving. The 17.5 square mile city has roughly 227 miles of roads to maintain.
The mayor said the work will be done by both city DPW crews and private contractors, “depending on the size of the job.”
The Niagara Falls City Council had temporarily delayed, then approved a $478,875 contract with Laubacker Enterprises for drainage structure replacement and repair in connection with the city’s 2026 road paving projects. Restaino had warned council members that a failure to approve the drainage work would put the city’s road paving plans for this summer in jeopardy.
“You need to make sure that after you mill the old road, the drainage in the old road is reset so that the new pavement lines up with it,” the mayor said. “Typically, you install new catch basins before paving because the new paving needs proper drainage.”
The mayor also said a new piece of milling machinery, recently acquired by the city, will now allow DPW workers to reheat and reuse millings for more pothole patching, once the paving season ends.
“So if we get dry days in September and October, we can use those excess millings, reheat them and use them for hot patching even though the asphalt plants are closed for the season,” Restaino said.
