NEWBURYPORT — Bronson de Stadler, a retired clinical social worker and amateur historian, will discuss the American Revolution and how the people and clergy at St. Paul’s Church in Newburyport (then Newbury) lived through that time on Wednesday, July 15, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Newburyport Senior/Community Center, 331 High St., Newburyport.
Seventeen-seventy-five was a contentious year in Newburyport history and very much so at St. Paul’s. The Right Reverend Edward Bass, rector of St. Paul’s from 1753-1803, struggled to hold his parish together during the American Revolution. As revolutionary sentiments became stronger, the hierarchical nature of the Church of England, and the fact that it was the England’s official state religion, inevitably led to a clash with many revolutionary ideals.
