A television reporter who visited Gloucester for a sail Tuesday evening aboard the city’s flagship dory fishing schooner got a first-hand lesson on what fishermen aboard them would endured in bad weather.
Mary Saladna of WCVB went aboard the historic schooner Adventure for a pre-Sail Boston outing on Gloucester Harbor to observe a schooner challenge race among three local schooners.
However, she had more adventure than planned when a torrential downpour postponed the challenge until another date.
But the crew and guests aboard the 122-foot Adventure donned ponchos and enjoyed an evening ride out in Gloucester’s panoramic historic harbor.
Schooner Adventure was first listed on the State Register of Historic Landmarks in 1989 and then designated a National Historical Landmark in 1994. The vessel is celebrating its 100th year anniversary.
In its heyday, Adventure was the highliner of Gloucester fishing fleet, fishing for cod, haddock and halibut along the Grand Banks.
