The Town of Newfane has achieved Bronze Certification through New York State’s Climate Smart Communities program, recognizing the Town’s commitment to building a more sustainable, resilient and environmentally responsible community.
Town Supervisor, John Syracuse credited the many individuals who contributed to what he described as a “strenuous but extremely rewarding” process.
“This certification did not happen because of the efforts of one person,” he said. “It was the result of countless hours of research, meetings, discussion, documentation and collaboration. I am extremely proud of everyone who stayed committed to seeing this process through.”
Syracuse specifically recognized the steadfast work of Erin Hannaburgh and Joshua McClain of the UB Regional Institute, Lucie Laurian, PhD, of the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning, and Town Grant Writer Sarah Gelnett of J. O’Connell & Associates.
“The guidance, knowledge and diligence provided by Erin, Joshua, Dr. Laurian and Sarah were instrumental to our success,” Syracuse said. “I also want to recognize our stakeholder group and the students who participated through Dr. Laurian’s program. Their involvement brought valuable ideas, energy and perspective to the process.”
The Bronze Certification provides Newfane with an important foundation for pursuing additional grant opportunities and funding that can help offset costs and support future projects throughout the town. New York State’s Climate Smart Communities program provides support for municipalities undertaking projects that improve resilience, reduce emissions and address climate-related challenges. “This is not the finish line— it is an important first step,” Syracuse said. “We now have another tool to help us compete for grant funding and move projects forward while being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.”
Syracuse concluded, “On behalf of the Town Board, I thank every person who contributed their time, knowledge and effort. This was a demanding process, but it demonstrated what can be accomplished when our community, educational partners and professional resources work together toward a common goal.”
