Some of the top young golfers in the region will hit the road this week was the 108th Massachusetts State Junior Championship kicks off at Wyantenuck Country Club in Great Barrington.
Leading the way, down the Mass. Pike on the three-hour ride is the two-time reigning Daily News High School Golfer of the Year, Jack Oreal. The rising Newburyport High senior, who also stars in basketball and baseball for the Clippers, continues to prove you can play multiple sports and dominate on the links.
He is also the two-time reigning Cape Ann League Kinney Division Most Valuable Player.
Joining him in the field will be Newbury’s Jack Carew, a recent Saint John’s Prep grad who will play Division 1 golf at Fairfield University.
Carew was a Salem News All-Star for the Prep. He captained a St. John’s squad that finished second in Division 1 this past fall.
Two others with local ties who are competing are Tyler Chin-Aleong, who plays out of Rowley Country Club and Ben Chisholm, an Ipswich Country Club member.
The State Junior opens on Tuesday with the first of two medal-play round. Following that, the top 16 players will advance to the match-play portion of the event until a winner is crowned on Friday.
Along with the title, the winner receives an exemption into the 2027 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.
