NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport Police Department bolstered its ranks Wednesday morning with the swearing in of three new officers, including the city’s first-ever pair of siblings.
Tristan Vincent, Mikayla Vincent and Steven Drury all took the oath of office shortly after the ceremony began at 10 a.m. in City Hall. They were joined by their families as well as their new colleagues.
“It’s exciting to see people that are still interested and excited about this profession, and each of us in this room, the officers behind you are here to welcome you together,” City Marshal Matt Simons said.
Mikayla and Tristan Vincent, who grew up in Newburyport, said they were thrilled to be tackling their new jobs together.
“It’s always been our goal to work here, so doing it together is an awesome experience,” Mikayla Vincent said.
The two siblings, alongside Drury, recently graduated from the Lynnfield Police Academy together.
“We had each other for support throughout the whole academy, so to have each other’s support on the job is definitely going to be nice,” Tristan Vincent said.
They said they are excited to get to work patrolling the familiar streets of their childhood and beyond.
“Just excited to start being able to give back to the community that we grew up in,” Tristan Vincent said.
Drury said he was a bit newer to the area, having moved to Newburyport a few years ago after meeting his wife.
“I’m really excited to be part of the team,” Drury said. “The leadership’s great, and I just want to be as best as I can.”
The three will go through a supervised training period to start things off.
“My job is to be a sponge, learn as much as I can and learn from senior officers in the department, just try and be as best I can to serve the community as best I can,” Drury said.
Simons said it was a great day for him as Marshal to be able to welcome three new officers, with the Vincent siblings being the first to be sworn in on the same day in the city’s history.
“Definitely a unique situation, especially having them come on at the exact same day, go to the academy together at the same time,” Simons said. “Definitely unique, but happy to have them and really neat to have a family that’s interested in law enforcement together.”
He joked that they will have to refer to them by first initial last name in order not to mix the two up.
With the addition of the new recruits, the department is up to 31 full-time officers.
“This will bring us within one of being fully staffed,” Simons said. “We do have one pending retirement coming later in July. But we’re in a comfortable place right now, and we’ll be looking a hire a couple more this summer, which we should get us close to full staff.”
