NEWBURYPORT — The inaugural Port Gingerbread Festival contest and exhibition will be held this weekend at Central Congregational Church, 14 Titcomb Street.
The festival takes place near Tracey Square, home to Santa’s Workshop. The event will feature dozens of gingerbread entries created by people of all ages and representing an array of magical designs – from traditional to innovative, classic to grand, according to organizer Mary Disette.
“It’s a great complement to the various holiday events taking place locally and something that all ages will enjoy,” Dissette said in a statement. “We have works of art and works of the heart and are sure that this will become a beloved tradition for those who come by to experience this display of holiday delight!”
The festival begins Friday as a panel of judges selects winners in various categories. Visitors can vote for the People’s Choice Award throughout the weekend.
Festival hours are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. – with the contest winners announced at 6 p.m., Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
The festival is free and open to all due to lead sponsorship from the Institution for Savings and additional support from dozens of area businesses, residents and organizations.
The festival is presented by the Greater Newburyport Village, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization with a mission to promote living well and independently through community engagement and neighborly support. The Village serves older adults by offering recreation, social connection, and logistical support.
A suggested donation option will be offered to benefit the Among Friends Meal Program, a program sponsored by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church that serves more than 300 meals per week to anyone seeking food or fellowship.
