NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport Department of Public Services Water Division will begin flushing the city’s water system on Tuesday with flushing continuing for approximately three and a half weeks. This is a modified flushing schedule due to ongoing drought conditions.
Hydrant flushing is an essential maintenance practice that helps ensure the safety, reliability, and quality of the city’s drinking water. By periodically opening hydrants and allowing water to flow at high velocities, utilities can remove sediment, mineral deposits, and naturally occurring buildup from water mains that can affect water quality, cause discoloration, and reduce system capacity.
Flushing also verifies that hydrants are operating properly for firefighting purposes, helps identify potential issues within the distribution system, and improves overall water circulation. Regular hydrant flushing plays a critical role in maintaining water quality, protecting public health, and ensuring the water distribution system continues to operate efficiently and reliably.
Where and when
Flushing will follow roughly an 18-day schedule barring any emergencies or weather-related issues. A notice will be posted on the city website by 4 p.m. for the following day’s flushing locations. Residents are advised to check the city’s website at www.cityofnewburyport.com for daily work locations and general updates.
Residential flushing will occur between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Night flushing of large mains will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight.
What to expect
Residents may experience low water pressure, temporary discoloration in water, air in pipes and, in rare cases, a disruption in water service.
The following suggestions will help avoid problems with discolored water:
• Check for discolored water before running appliances that use water (dishwashers/washing machines).
• Wait until discoloration in water subsides and flushing is complete in your area. Run cold water faucets to express air and discolored water.
• Do not run hot water because discolored water can get pulled into your hot water tank and take longer to clear.
• Avoid using bleach in laundry as this worsens any staining that may occur.
• In the event clothes are stained, there are products available that will remove the stains when re-washing the clothes. Contact the Business Office at 16C Perry Way to obtain this product (free of charge to residents).
• Do not dry stained laundry.
