NEWBURYPORT — “Through His Eyes,” an exhibition celebrating the work of late photographer Jay McCarthy, is on view through Sunday, Sept. 27, at Newburyport Art, 65 Water St.
McCarthy, according to gallery officials, was passionate about his craft of photography for over 50 years. Beginning with a love of film photography and slide work, Jay specialized in landscape and portrait work, but also found beauty in abstract and whimsical subjects. His award winning work has been shown in multiple galleries, corporations and institutions, and hangs in homes around the country and abroad.
A graduate of the UMass-Lowell, McCarthy attended the New York Institute of Photography. Following retirement from project management work at Wang Corp, Compac, and Fidelity, he served as president of Newburyport Art’s board of directors, and thoroughly enjoyed his years working there as gallery associate and moderator of the Photo Interest Group. He particularly enjoyed introducing photography classes to Veterans and young students as well.
Join his wife, Nancy McCarthy, in a celebration of her husband’s life through his photography, including a public, cordial invite to the reception on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 4 to 6 p.m. The gallery and reception are free and open to the public and all of Jay McCarthy’s photographs are for sale.
The handicapped-accessible galleries are free and open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. All works are for sale. More information, as well as an online gallery, is available at newburyportart.org.
Newburyport Art, founded in 1948, is dedicated to promoting and exhibiting members’ work and providing art education and access to the visual arts for the entire community.
