PETOSKEY — North Central Michigan College won a pair of women’s basketball games and had six volleyball players earn all-conference this week.
Chloe Winchell (Freeland) and Taylor Hafeman (Scottsbluff, Neb.) were named first-team all-Michigan Community College Athletic Association, while Laken LeBaron (Freeland) was second team and Annie Grew (Grand Ledge), Gracie Jones (Newport) and Ceara LeBlanc (Brimley) earned honorable mention status.
Shannon Flippin stepped down after the season, and a search is underway for the next Timberwolves head coach.
The Timberwolves women’s basketball team defeated Oakland CC 95-92 in OT at home, then topped Kellogg CC 65-58.
The men’s team dropped games against Oakland (100-75) and Kellogg (77-66) at home.
Arika Taylor (Joliet, Ill.) led the women’s team in scoring in both wins this week, putting up 22 points and 11 rebounds against Oakland, while Evelyn VanTol (Frankfort) and Cadence Cullen (St. Ignace) joined Taylor with double-doubles. VanTol had 20 points and 19 boards, while Cullen logged 16 and 15. Ally Sutton (Kalkaska) had six points, four rebounds and a steal off the bench.
LeBlanc hit a 3-pointer to tie the Oakland game and force overtime, then in OT nailed clutch free throws to secure the win. In Saturday’s game against KCC, she was 9-for-10 from the line.
De’Machae McDowell (Washington D.C.) set a new school record for the most blocks in a single game with seven against Kellogg CC.
Ryan Ehlert (Pembine, Wis.) had a career-high 25 points against Kellogg CC, helping pull the Timberwolves within two near the end of the game. This included a streak of hitting four 3-pointers in four consecutive possessions in the final eight minutes.
The Timberwolves don’t have any athletic events scheduled this week.
