PETOSKEY — North Central Michigan College won its first volleyball match of the season, earning head coach Ann Skufca her first collegiate head coach victory.
The Timberwolves (1-6) hosted the Timberwolves Quad where they faced off against No. 17-ranked NJCAA DII St. Clair County CC, plus Kellogg CC and Alpena CC.
NCMC was the only team to take a set from SCCC, which went 3-0 on the weekend to win the quad.
The Timberwolves beat Alpena CC 18-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-14, and lost to SC4 23-25, 25-22, 12-25, 9-25 and Kellogg CC 19-25, 19-25, 11-25.
Gracie Jones (Newport) was named to the All-Tournament team after putting up a team-high 27 kills to go with 31 digs.
Abby Hicks (Leland) served up 10 aces in the three matches, along with 62 assists. Madilyn Tornes (Wayland Union) led the team in each game and for the weekend with digs, picking up double digits in each match. She finished the weekend with 39 digs, 14 kills and seven service aces.
Syerra Mills (Clare) was strong at the net with 12 kills and nine blocks, including three solo blocks in the match vs. Alpena CC.
Freshman Lily Kwiatkowski (Rudyard) had seven kills, five blocks and three aces for the Timberwolves.
The Timberwolves cross country team competes for the first time Friday at the Drenth Memorial 5K hosted by Central Michigan University in Shepherd, taking on NCAA Division I and II opponents as well as NAIA teams from across Michigan. The women’s race begins at 11 a.m., with the men to follow. The women’s volleyball team has a two-week break before competing Sept. 12 at Bay College for a tri-match against Bryant & Stratton College and Blackhawk Technical College.
