PETOSKEY — North Central Michigan College closed out its volleyball season at the Great Lakes District Tournament where the team went 1-2, including NCMC’s first postseason victory.
The Timberwolves (16-13) defeated Cuyahoga Community College 15-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-9 before losing to Southwestern Michigan College 21-25, 14-25, 18-25 and Lansing CC 25-20, 19-25, 22-25, 25-16, 11-15.
Chloe Winchell (Freeland) tied her own NCMC record with 22 kills in the final match against Lansing CC.
Taylor Hafeman (Scottsbluff, Neb.) recorded 50 digs on the weekend and Laken LeBaron (Freeland) dished out 75 assists in the three matches.
Ceara LeBlanc (Brimley) served up eight aces in the tournament and once eliminated travelled with teammate Gracie Jones to play in the Saturday game with women’s basketball.
Three Timberwolves cross country runners braved the snowstorm in Iowa to run the NJCAA DII Cross Country National Championship.
Kendra Couturier (Leelanau St. Mary) finished 101st out of 321 runners at the NJCAA DII National Championship. This placed her in the top 30% of all runners. Sydney Feagan (Harbor Springs) finished with a time of 22:25 landing in 124th place overall.
In the men’s race, Dakota Taylor (Engadine) finished 148th out of 344 runners with a time of 30 minutes and one second.
The men’s and women’s basketball teams both dropped a pair of games.
The women lost to No. 6-ranked (DIII) Owens CC 120-30 and Terra State 60-45.
The men played the same two teams, falling 78-57 to Owens and 104-65 vs. Terra.
Cadence Cullen (St. Ignace) scored 21 points for the women’s team, while Arika Taylor (Joliet, Ill.) had a career-high six assists at Terra State.
De’Machae McDowell (Washington D.C.) had a double-double at Owens CC, pulling down 12 rebounds and putting up 12 points. He also had seven blocks on the weekend.
The men’s and women’s basketball teams have two home games this week, hosting Oakland CC on Wednesday and Kellogg CC on Friday.
MCCAA Volleyball awards will be announced Tuesday.
