HIGHGATE CENTER, Vt. — Northeastern Clinton junior Winnie Simpson blew past the 100-point mark for his career on Wednesday in the Cougars’ 6-6 overtime tie with Missisquoi Valley Union in non-league hockey.
Simpson needed just one point to achieve the milestone and reached it with a second-period goal. He finished the contest with three goals, including two short-handed tallies, and added three assists for 105 points.
“Simpson reached the 100-point mark early in the second period off a great feed from (Owen) Ebersol,” NCCS coach Scott Lafountain said.
“Winnie is a great player to coach and fun to watch on the ice as he proves night in and night out that he is one of the best in the league.”
Ebersol also had a strong game with two goals and three assists for five points and Baylon Cronkrite added a goal a goal and two assists.
Simpson’s third goal of the game, a short-handed tally coming with just 46 seconds left in the contest, gave the Cougars a 6-5 lead.
But the hosts scored with only seven seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
“We weren’t able to secure the win, giving up a goal with seven seconds left,” Lafountain said. “Especially after we were able to battle back from a 3-0 deficit in the first period.”
MVU took a 3-0 lead in the opening stanza, NCCS tied it in the second and it went back and forth in the third.
The Cougars, who held a 34-20 advantage in shots on goal, will next host Saranac in CVAC play on Saturday.
