CHAMPLAIN — Runs were at a minimum on Tuesday when Northeastern Clinton went eight innings before edging out a 2-1 victory over Beekmantown in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference softball.
Winning pitcher Bailee Lafountain allowed three hits, walked four and struck out seven.
Losing pitcher Laci Lapier, meanwhile, surrendered six hits, walked two and had three strikeouts.
The Cougars scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Desiree Dubois singled, Lexi Roberts reached on an error and Kiersten Stahl walked to load the bases. After one out, Emma Guay hit a fly ball to center that popped out of the center fielder’s glove, allowing Dubois to score.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second when Ashley Barnes doubled and later scored. NCCS would then tie it, at 1-all, in the fourth.
“Both teams struggled putting hits together to score runs,” NCCS coach Carrie McComb said.
“I’m very proud of the effort we gave throughout the game. Each player contributed and did their job. If we continue to play like this and add some timely hitting, we will have a very successful season.
“Beekmantown had some nice plays and their catcher Anna Dutil kept us honest on the base paths.”

PLATTSBURGH — Abby Owen pitched a one-hitter over five innings and collected a single, double and triple at the plate to help lead Saranac to a win over the Hornets.
Owen struck out 13 and walked four.
Molly Denis added three hits for the Spartans and Elizabeth Recore chipped in a double and single. Kayla Pellerin had a triple and Maddy Gagnier a double among Saranac’s 10 hits.
The Spartans, already leading 6-0, broke the game open by scoring eight runs in the third.
“The score sums it up pretty good,” PHS coach Cindy McMahon said. “We didn’t do anything well tonight. We didn’t hit, we didn’t play very good defense and we didn’t run the bases very well.
“On the flip side, Saranac did all those things really well. Their pitcher was outstanding as well. This should be a wake-up call for our girls and we will see how they respond.”

“Offensively, we swung the bats well and kept the line moving, especially in the third and fourth innings. I’m very pleased with how we are playing to start the season.”

Grace Cook picked up the pitching win and Emmy Nephew took the loss.
Alexis Mascarenas accounted for three of the Vikings’ eight hits, including a double.

“Both teams played well and NAC came out on top,” Moriah coach Don Tesar said. “NAC put the ball in play with runners on and played good defense.
“Emmy Nephew pitched a good, tough game for her first varsity experience and Alexis Mascarenas hit the ball very well.”
