SARANAC — Northern Adirondack will look to make it a sweep of team honors this season when the Section VII Wrestling Championships are held today at Saranac Central High School, starting at 10 a.m.
The Bobcats recently won the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference title after edging Saranac in a tie-breaker. Both teams finished the regular season with 7-1 records, with the teams splitting their two matches.
The defending-champion Spartans, Beekmantown, AuSable Valley and Peru are hoping to give the Bobcats a run for the sectional team title and also crown individual champions who will compete at the NYSPHSAA Division II event on Feb. 23-24 at the MVP Arena in Albany.
Top-seeded wrestlers for NAC include Jackson LaBarge (101 pounds), Hayden Bartlemus (116), Parker Manor (160) and Trey McGee (215).
Host Saranac also has four top-seeded wrestlers in Teegan Smith (108), Gavin Morrow (124), Alex Clancy (138) and Dylan Cogswell (285).
Beekmantown has three seeded first in Sawyer Bell (131), Jacob Magiera (145) and Jack Brown (170). Bell is undefeated on the season at 41-0.
The remaining two top seeds are AuSable Valley’s Dom LaPier (152) and Warren Pray (190). LaPier is also unbeaten on the season at 36-0.
The schedule for today includes: weigh-ins from 8-9:30 a.m.; coaches meeting from 9-9:30 a.m.; parade of wrestlers by school from 9:45-10 a.m.; start of wrestling 10 a.m.; semifinals 11:30 a.m.; wrestle-backs 1 p.m.; third- and fourth-place matches 2 p.m.; and finals at 3 p.m.
