NEWBURYPORT — The Museum of Old Newbury invites the public to a special illustrated lecture, “Secure the Shadow: Spirit & Post-mortem Photography in the 19th Century,” on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m., at 98 High St., Newburyport.
In the 19th century, photography was both science and sorcery – a miraculous way to “secure the shadow” of a loved one before it faded forever.
For many Victorians, the line between life and death was more permeable than it seems today, and photographers stepped in to bridge that boundary. This program explores the fascinating world of post-mortem and spirit photography, tracing its development from early memorial portraiture to the rise of so-called “spirit photographs” in which the departed seemed to reappear beside the living.
Museum of Old Newbury Executive Director and local historian Bethany Groff Dorau will guide people through this evocative and sometimes eerie intersection of art, technology and grief.
The presentation will feature rare and compelling period images, highlighting the sincerity and showmanship of the photographers who made them – and the families who found comfort in their work.
The event will also include a tasting of seasonal drinks and apple cider doughnuts courtesy of Ipswich Ale Brewery.
Tickets are $10 for members, $20 for nonmembers and are available at www.newburyhistory.org/calendar/2025/11/1/secure-the-shadow-spirit-amp-post-mortem-photography-in-the-19th-century.
