BIG RAPIDS, MICH. — Evan Murr scored with 6.3 seconds remaining in overtime, and Minnesota State defeated Ferris State 3-2 in a CCHA men’s hockey game Saturday.
It was Murr’s first collegiate goal and assisted by Jordan Steinmetz during the 3-on-3 period.
“He showed poise and kept his head up and made the play,” coach Luke Strand said in a phone interview. “Everyone is growing into a new identity, and he’s taking advantage of his opportunities.”
The Mavericks swept the conference-opening series, coupled with Friday’s 6-2 win, after coming off the bye week.
Sam Morton scored the first two goals, with the second one coming on the power play. Jakob Stender assisted on the first goal, and Lucas Sowder assisted on the power-play goal.
Morton had three goals and two assists in the series, while Sowder had five assists.
Ferris State tied the game with five minutes remaining in the third period.
Alex Tracy was the winning goaltender. Shots on goal was not available.
“A lot of guys found ways to contribute,” Strand said. “It’s always a tough game on Saturday, but the guys really battled out there tonight.”
The Mavericks (4-3-1, 2-0-0 in CCHA) return home for games against Bemidji State on Friday and Saturday at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
Bemidji State is 4-6-0, 3-3-0 in CCHA games after splitting a series at Michigan Tech.
The Mavericks are the only undefeated team left in the CCHA.
“We’re really excited to get back home,” Strand said. “We love playing in front of our fans and community. Getting two wins on the road is important, and our older players really led the way. Now, we have some growing to do.”
