MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County Branch of The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) along with various other organizations will be hosting a variety of events for the MLK Weekend Celebration.
The celebration will kick off on Thursday with an “I Have A Dream Vision Board” activity hosted by the Art Center of Moultrie. This event will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Arts Center, 401 Seventh Ave. S.W. The cost is $10. Pre-registration is requested. The Colquitt County NAACP will host a strategic planning meeting at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12. The meeting will be held at Strike Zone 10 located at 28 Industrial Drive in Moultrie. This event is for members only.
The NAACP will host a canned food drive 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Piggly Wiggly, 1209 First Ave. S.E. Anyone interested in the food drive should contact Shelia Hill at 229-529-3081.
The Colquitt County NAACP and the Colquitt County Interdenominational Christian Alliance will host a worship service Sunday, Jan. 14, to commemorate the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The service will start at 6 p.m. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 421 Sixth Ave. N.W. The keynote speaker is Pastor Jaki Johnson. The local NAACP wants community members to “Start Their Monday Morning off the Right Way!” They will be serving free breakfast at the 50 Yard Line located at 203 W. Central Ave. Breakfast plates will be given out 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15.
Mother Easter Baptist Church will be the site of the Moultrie Women’s Federated Club’s annual MLK program. The address is 1400 W. Central Ave. The program will begin at 11 a.m. This year’s theme is “The Power of the Dream: Forging a Path Forward.” The keynote speaker is Dr. Charles E. Gilbert.
During the program the Moultrie Women’s Federated Club will present the 2024 Community Service award to Luke Strong III. The 2024 Distinguished Service award is being awarded to the late Sondra Hampton. For questions related to the program, please contact Stacy Jones (President) at 229-456-2070.
The Colquitt County NAACP has planned a “Culminating Celebration” on the Colquitt County Square for MLK Jr. Day. The celebration will have free food, activities, games and live performances. It will be held from noon to 4 p.m.
If you cannot attend the full Monday celebration, consider attending the MLK Day Parade scheduled for 2 p.m. The parade’s theme is “Thriving Together to Raise the Bar.” This year’s grand marshal is Trudie Hill
