FROSTBURG — Mountain Ridge rolled to a pair of routs to open its season Saturday, defeating Francis Scott Key, 4-0, and Boonsboro, 5-1, at its shootout tournament.
The Miners (2-0) took a 1-0 halftime lead in Game 1 when Izzy Robison scored off a corner kick at the 21:29 mark.
Norah Patterson put a Jazmyn White cross into the back of the net with 28:14 left in the second half, Fiona Ruddell planted a Jessica Kline corner in goal with 25:25 to play, and Kline had an unassisted goal with 15:42 remaining.
Mountain Ridge out-shot Francis Scott Key, 17-4, and had an 8-0 edge in corner kicks. Taylor Lamberson made two saves for her first of two cleansheets on the day.
“Our first official game of the season resulting in a shutout is exciting,” Mountain Ridge head coach Jenna Delaney said. “Our passing looked great and our team worked well to maintain possession.”
Delaney highlighted the defensive performances of Emma Oyer, Kate Imes, Kylee Kiddy and Robison for their high effort.
In the second game, Mountain Ridge fell behind 1-0 but rattled off five unanswered goals to earn the sweep. The Miners finished with a 30-1 edge in shots.
Bella Andrews tallied Boonsboro goal in the game’s fourth minute. Allie Knieriem found an equalizer with 32:03 on the clock, and with 2:14 to play in the half, Reese Rizzo scored off a Brylee Gray corner kick for a 2-1 Mountain Ridge lead at the half.
Patterson set up a goal by Robison with 17:52 remaining and the floodgates opened. Knieriem put a Ruddell cross into the goal with 14:02 on the clock, and Kline upped the Miners’ margin to 5-1 off a White assist with 8:38 left.
Mountain Ridge took all seven of the game’s corner kicks.
“We held possession most of the game with several shots on goal,” Delaney said. “The hard work never stopped and all the shots finally paid off with a 5-1 outcome resulting in us winning the tournament.”
Mountain Ridge is at Southern (1-1) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Southern splits with North, South Hagerstown
ACCIDENT — Southern defeated South Hagerstown, 16-0, and fell to North Hagerstown, 3-0, Saturday at a tournament at Northern.
Four Rams scored twice each against South: Sydney Scott, Jayden Weaver, Emma Skeens and Addy Tasker. Scott added two assists, and Weaver also assisted on a goal.
Ava Hunt finished with a goal and an assists, and Iris Dubansky, Tessa Dubansky, Reeslyn Sisler, Margot Ludwig, Makenna Reams, Chloe Dewitt and Ashlyn Leader all had a goal each.
Natalie Bell had one assist.
In the second game, Southern’s keeper Tasker made 11 saves. Statistics for North Hagerstown were not provided.
Southern hosts Mountain Ridge on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Allegany draws, loses
BRUNSWICK — Allegany lost to Brunswick, 5-3, and drew Jefferson, 1-1, at a tournament in Brunswick on Saturday.
Brunswick scored the game’s first two goals at the 36:02 and 27:45 marks.
Allegany’s Ella Shade found the back of the net on an unassisted score (15:11), but Brunswick found a third-first half tally with 5:12 remaining to lead 3-1 at halftime.
Brunswick scored the first two goals of the second half to lead 5-1. Myia Miller converted a penalty kick with 20:11 to play, and Shade scored, assisted by Avery Miller, with 13:43 left.
Miller gave the Campers (0-1-1) a 1-0 lead over Jefferson on an assist by Sierra Campbell. They led throughout until Jefferson found a late equalizer with 30 seconds to play.
Allegany hosts Fort Hill on Thursday at 5 p.m.
