MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota State University women’s hockey team stunned the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis Saturday with a double overtime win in game two of their best of three playoff series.
Madison Mashuga found the back of the net with a one-timer in the second overtime, beating No. 3 Minnesota at Ridder Arena and forcing a decisive game three on Sunday.
The Mavericks struck first in the opening period with a goal by MacKenzie Bourgerie. They extended that lead early in the second when Claire Vekich score on a power play. Sydney Langseth added another three minutes later.
The Gophers, however, answered a minute later, then added another in the ninth minute, cutting the Mavericks’ lead to 3-2 heading into the final period.
Alexis Paddington scored just 15 seconds into the final frame to give the Mavericks a two-goal cushion. But the Gophers scored two quick goals to tie the game.
Both teams had power play chances in overtime but failed to convert before Mashuga’s game-winner.
The teams meet again at 3 p.m. today.
