FRAMINGHAM — Retired Massachusetts State Police Lt. Edward Johnson III was formally recognized for his off-duty efforts finding the body of a missing Lawrence boy in the Merrimack River last spring.
Johnson, of Methuen, was praised by MSP “for his selfless conduct and commitment to public service after he voluntarily assisted, while off duty and on his personal time, in the search that led to the recovery of a missing four-year-old child.”
The son of a retired state police detective lieutenant, Johnson received the MSP Medal of Merit, one of the department’s highest honors, which recognizes conduct and service beyond the scope of assigned duty, during a ceremony Thursday.
At the same ceremony, the Lawrence and Methuen delegation of the Massachusetts House of Representatives presented Johnson with a House citation.
“Lt. Johnson did not have to step forward, but he did,” said Rep. Francisco Paulino, D-Methuen.
“He gave his time, his experience, and his presence during an incredibly difficult search. Today’s recognitions reflect service that speaks to character and responsibility.”
House Majority Leader Frank Moran, D-Lawrence, emphasized the example set by Johnson.
“This recognition is well deserved. Lt. Johnson’s actions reflect professionalism, responsibility, and a deep respect for service that extends beyond the job itself,” Moran said.
Rep. Estela Reyes highlighted the importance of acknowledging service shown through action.
“In moments like these, leadership shows itself quietly,” said Rep. Reyes, D-Lawrence.
“Lt. Johnson’s actions during this search reflect a genuine commitment to community.”
Johnson, in his personal pontoon boat, searched for days before locating the body of Azriel Lopez, 4, in the Tewksbury stretch of the Merrimack River.
On April 19, Lopez, slipped and fell into the water near Arcand Drive in Lowell while fishing with his mother and siblings.
Johnson said he found the boy’s body in the river near the west side of the Trull Brook Golf Course.
