Meridian Police Department is suspending the search for suspects in a July 16 shooting after speaking with the victim, the department announced Thursday in a news release.
The shooting, which took place around 29th Street and Highland Avenue, sent one person to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the back of the head. The victim was later transported to Jackson in critical condition.
“Investigators of the Criminal Investigations Division of MPD opened an investigation and spent numerous man hours on the case,” the department said.
Officers on Thursday had an opportunity to interview the victim at the Jackson hospital, the department said. Although the victim can’t communicate verbally, he was able to indicate that he did not know the shooter or who was with him when he got shot. The victim also communicated to investigators that he did not want to press charges against the shooter.
Based on the interview, MPD said it is ending the investigation for the time being.
“The victim was advised the case could be reopened should he change his mind,” the department said.
