MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Moorefield scored three runs in the first and held off a Berkeley Springs rally for a 6-3 victory in its opener Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) saw their 4-0 lead cut to one run after the Indians plated three in the fourth, but they tacked on insurance runs in the fourth and sixth and had solid relief pitching.
Moorefield’s Blake Snyder allowed no runs on two hits across four innings of relief to register as the winning arm. He struck out four and walked one.
Trevor Baldwin got the start and exited with a lead, but his three innings were not enough to be eligible for the victory. Baldwin gave up three runs on three hits and struck out five to one walk.
Moorefield’s leading hitter was Edison Metheny, who went 2 for 3 with a double and three runs. Baldwin also doubled.
Kyle Moore took the loss for Berkeley Springs, surrendering five runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Berkeley Springs’ Jalen Miller had two doubles, and Caiden Groves also tallied a two-bagger.
Moorefield hosts Hampshire on Monday at 6 p.m.
