GIRLS BASKETBALL
Danvers 47, Saugus 19: Allowing just six points in the second half — and a mere one in the fourth quarter — the Falcons “took our defense to another level”, according to head coach Dave Chisholm, while improving to 13-1.
Sienna Goldberg (3 assists, 2 steals) took a pair of charges to lead the strong defensive effort, which also included Sienna Lynch (3 blocks, 4 rebounds, 3 assists) and Lila Flynn (5 rebounds, 4 steals). Scoring-wise, Angie Djoko scored 24 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to go with six steals, with Kyla Moroney (9 points, 5 rebounds) and Annabel Boyd (5 points, 4 assists) also playing key roles.
Marblehead 47, Ipswich 21: Racing out to a 16-point halftime lead, the Magicians built upon that over the final 16 minutes and improved to 8-5 with this non-league triumph. Tessa Andriano scored a dozen points and Greta Sachs added 11 for the winners. Carys Moran (5 points) had another solid game in the victory for Marblehead, which hosts Salem Tuesday on Senior Night.
Salem Academy 46, Salem 27: The visiting Witches battled throughout but came out on the losing end, falling to 0-12 on the season.
Billerica 46, Bishop Fenwick 37: The Crusaders (now 10-4) suffered rare back-to-back defeats with this road setback. Senior captain and recent 1,000 point scorer Celia Neilson led the way for Fenwick with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and six steals.
Methuen 55, Masconomet 45: Another spectacular evening by Samia Lalikos (career high 27 points, 12 rebounds) went for naught in the Chieftains non-league loss to Methuen, which buried nine 3-pointers. Hudson Rollins added seven points and a team-high five steals, while Sabrina Cafarelli pulled down 14 rebounds and also had three thefts.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Essex Tech 62, Foxborough Regional 24: The Hawks (now 9-5) moved to within one win of officially qualifying for the state playoffs thanks to 12 points apiece from senior captain Antonio Ceruolo and sophomore Trevor Guthrie.
Saugus 60, Danvers 57: The Falcons dropped to 6-8 after an extremely close loss to their Northeastern Conference foes.
BOYS HOCKEY
Lincoln-Sudbury 3, Masconomet 0: Sophomore Jacob Sofronas made 30 saves for the Chieftains (2-12) in their non-league defeat.
GIRLS SKIING
Masconomet 80, North Andover 55: Fine performances from Hannah Mitchell (24.34 seconds), Emily Stearns (24.67) and Violet Malinowski (25.78), who finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, enabled the Chieftains to race past the Scarlet Knights on the slopes at Bradford Ski Area. Also finishing among the top 10 races for Masconomet were Ada Paglierani (7th, 26.85), Erin Daly (8th, 26.91) and Izzy Beauvais (9th, 27.31).
Hamilton-Wenham drops two: In a pair of tightly contested races, the Generals came out on the wrong end of defeats to Haverhill (71-64) and Newburyport (73-62). Evie Bernard was the top finisher for Hamilton-Wenham in 25.03 seconds, followed by teammates Molly Ryan (25.39), Maren McCaughey (26.25) and Samantha Bielek (27.42).
GIRLS HOCKEY
Masconomet 2, Wayland 2: Madie Dupuis and Kayleigh LeColst assisted on each other’s goals and the Chieftians (4-9-1) had a 2-1 lead before Wayland tied it up with 1:57 to go. Neither team could score in overtime with sophomore Gabby Chiulli played well in net and reaching 1,000 saves for her career.
Marblehead 3, Concord-Carlisle 2: Nola Conley’s game-winner came late in the third period set up nicely by Emilia Russo to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Lady Headers. Paige Waldman and Vera Conley also scored for Marblehead while Nola Ferraressa made 20 saves including a couple of nice ones when CC pulled the goalie for a 6-on-4 advantage late.
