GIRLS BASKETBALL
Bishop Fenwick 40, Walpole 39: Tournament MVP Celia Neilson had nine points, seven rebounds, seven assists and 10 steals as the Crusaders fought back from a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter to claim the Sue Rivard Tournament championship game at Oliver Ames HS. Fellow senior captain Caitlin Boyle was also on the All-Tournament Team after scoring 22 points and grabbing eight rebounds Monday. Senior captain Brittney Figulski had several big steals, including one with four seconds left to seal the victory, and junior Reese Spurchise also excellent defensively for Fenwick (now 4-0).
Hamilton-Wenham 26, Danvers 21: Utilizing a box-and-1 zone defense helped the Generals pick up a much needed road victory in the first round of the Danvers Holiday Tournament. Gabriella Jewett, Olive Bevilacqua and Sam Lenocker were all defensive stars for H-W, with Margot BryceMorris powering her squad offensively with 10 points. Asa Label added a pair of three-pointers and Addie Olson was strong off the bench.
The host Falcons scored just four points in the second half, sending them to Tuesday’s consolation game against Essex Tech. Annabel Boyd and Angie Djoko both had six points for DHS, with Kendall Murphy adding four.
Masconomet 46, Manchester Essex 41: Sami Lalikos scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and the Chieftains (3-1) held the Hornets to three fourth quarter points in a comeback win. Shaye Vella chipped in six points and Zoe Cote scored six along with two of her team’s five blocks.
Waltham 46, Peabody 31: Despite a team-best 13 points from Olivia Gaynor, the Tanners (now 4-1) dropped their first game of the season in the first round of the Waltham Christmas Tournament. Aliana Ryan and Avery Bettencourt also had fine games for Peabody, which will face Arlington in Tuesday’s consolation round.
Malden Catholic 47, Beverly 31: Gwen Jones led the Panthers (0-6) with 12 points while Clara Kostro also had a nice game all-around and scored 10.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Swampscott 87, Mystic Valley 28: Teddy O’Neill scored 21 points, Connor Chiarello contributed 17 and Dean Collins added 16 as the Big Blue (4-0) remained unbeaten after rolling in the first round of their own Tournament. A stifling defense and efficient transition game were also key to help them move into Tuesday’s championship contest against Hamilton-Wenham.
Danvers 72, Gloucester 70: Luca Tirella scored 19 points and had 13 rebounds and Kyle Sillars scored 19 as well to spark the Falcons (3-2) in a thriller on the road. Connor DiTomaso added 15 points in the win and Anthony Gaudino rounded out a balanced effort by scoring 14.
BOYS HOCKEY
Amesbury 4, Beverly 3 (OT): The Panthers (now 3-2) went from being on the power play late in regulation with a chance to win it to being assessed a double minor and losing when the host Redhawks scored 4-on-3 in the OT session. Captain Logan Bowen led Beverly offensively with a goal and one assist, with Casey Chirco and defenseman Ryan Everett also scoring. Mikey O’Leary, Drew Murphy, Coby Malionek and D-man Teddy Fisher each had assists, and goalie Tyler Chin-Aleong made 28 saves.
WRESTLING
O’Brien, Hart perform well for Marblehead/Swampscott: At the Pentucket Holiday Tournament, the Black & Blue saw senior captains Liam O’Brien (138 pounds) and Colin Hart (175 lbs.) take fourth and fifth place, respectively, in their weight classes. O’Brien went 2-2 and reached the semifinals, while Hart went 4-1, with all of his victories via pinfall. Freshman Nolan Glass (150 lbs.) had his best tournament showing yet, going 2-2, and junior Andrew Delisle (157 lbs.) had a win by pin while freshman Ryker Genest had his first varsity triumph with a pin of his own. Seventh graders Elliot Donato and Ollie Dion, first-year sophomore Phil Duclos and senior Xaviere Tejada also wrestled well.
