GYMNASTICS
State Individual Championships: Beverly’s Carli Moran took third in the All-Around at Monday’s State Individual Championships, finishing with a score of 37.675. She placed first overall on the uneven bars (9.55) and the floor exercises (9.65) and was third on the vault (9.475) while also scoring a 9.0 on the balance beam.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Hamilton-Wenham 70, Lynn English 60: Senior captain Caden Schrock scored a career high 33 points, including the 1,000th of his career, as the Generals (now 8-11) prevailed in the first round of their own Patton Tournament. Fellow senior captain Alex Menegoni chipped in 18 points, including five 3-pointers, for Hamilton-Wenham, which will host Saugus for the tournament title Tuesday night.
Swampscott 58, Lynn Classical 54: Senior Connor Chiarello knocked down some late free throws and sophomore Teddy O’Neill finished with 27 points and the Big Blue (15-4) avenged one of their few losses this season. It was the second time in a week that Swampscott downed a top ten ranked team in Division 3.
Central Catholic 56, Masconomet 52: In the finals of the Comcast Tournament at Emmanuel College, the Chieftains (16-3) came from 14 points down in the first half against the top-ranked team in Eastern Mass and had a chance to tie with under 30 seconds to go. Senior Jimmy Farrell had 24 points to lead Masconomet.
KIPP Academy 58, Peabody 54: Junior Mark Mendonca had 20 points and five assists but the Tanners (7-15) couldn’t get the late bucket they needed at home. Thad Broughton finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds and five assists and Jeremiah Agbonavbare scored 11 points with six rebounds for Peabody, which won five of its last nine games to end the season.
Andover 71, St. John’s Prep 58: The Eagles battled on the road in this non-league contest before falling to 3-16.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Hamilton-Wenham 38, Swampscott 32: Margot Bryce Morris scored nine of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter to help the Generals (11-9) pull away in a close contest. Asa Labell (eight points) and Grace Harris (five) hit key 3-pointers, Olive Bevilacqua played well and Gabriella Jewitt was a force on defense. Anna Kanders paced the Big Blue with 13 points.
Marblehead 44, North Andover 31: Tess Andriano, Nora Mahan, Ainsley Macdonald, Lucy Macdonald, Hailey Schmitt and Greta Sachs all played well as the Magicians came out on top on the consolation round of the Larry McIntire tourney in their home gym.
Bishop Fenwick 47, Hanover 38: The Crusaders (14-5) advanced to the finals of the Norwell Invitational, where they’ll face Needham on Wednesday. Junior Reese Spurchise had six points, seven rebounds and four assists for Fenwick and senior Celia Neilson had a team-high 10 points with five assists and seven boards.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Woburn 3, Beverly 1: Junior Asuka Keough got the Panthers on the board with under a minute to go, but the host Tanners pulled out the win as Beverly finished the regular season 15-5. Meredith Johnston and Haylee Freeman assisted on the BHS score. Eighth grader Avery Mason also played well in net, making 24 saves.
Melrose 4, Masconomet 0: The Chieftains (6-11-2) were blanked on the road in their second-to-last regular season bout.
BOYS HOCKEY
Beverly 5, Pentucket 1: Senior captain Mikey O’Leary had a big game with two goals and two assists, pacing the Panthers (10-6-3) past Pentucket. Xander Alexeyev and Logan Bowen each added a goal and one assist for Beverly, with senior Henry Mills also sniping one home and Matt Rex dishing out a career high three assists. Other helpers went to Colby Kaszynski and Ryan Everett, and goalie Ty Chin-Aleong stopped 29 shots to pick up another victory.
Danvers 7, Triton 0: Senior Gaven Cooper scored a pair of goals, freshman Anthony Sheehan and captain Drew Godfried each had a goal and an assist, and junior Hunter DeDominics and freshman Brady Swanton each had their first career goals as the Falcons rolled in the first round of the Newburyport Bank Tournament’s Fournier Division. Jacob Langlais also scored; Owen Swanton (2), Aiden Hockney, Connor Dembowski, Cooper Dunham and Colby Medeiros all had assists; and goalies Evan Morey (10 saves through 2 periods) and Foster Bittner (6 saves, three on odd-man rushes) combined for the shutout.
St. John’s Prep 7, Franklin 2: Seniors Drew Macaulay and captain JR Goldstein each had two goals and an assist, helping the Eagles (14-3-2) to their 10th straight win. Brandon Ward and Tim McColgan each had a goal and an assist while Matt Greene added a single talliy for the winners, with Jesse Bernardinelli making 12 of 13 saves and Marco Ferraserro playing the final five minutes. Brennan Waters (2), Anthony Petruccelli (2), Cam Anderson (2), Kevin Correa, Joey Lebrun and Owen Hanson all contributed assists.
Algonquin 1, Marblehead 0: A strong 26-save performance from goalie Bowden Laramie went for naught as the Headers (5-13-1) fell in the first round of the Newburyport Bank Tournament’s Bresnahan Division.
Andover 4, Masconomet 2: A slow start in which they allowed all four goals doomed the Chieftains (2-17) in a non-league contest. Captain Brendan Sheehan and freshman Cole Smith-Beaver had the Masconomet goals, with assists going to Ben Miga, Nick Vetrano, Drew Nelson and Cam Rybicki. Sophomore goalie Jackson Yespy finished with 31 saves.
Peabody/Saugus/Swampscott 7, Lowell 1: Late Sunday night, the Tanners got a goal and four assists from John Morello to advance into the Newburyport Bank Tournament’s Gulazian Division final Tuesday against Haverhill. Ryan Lockhart and Matvey Stupnikov each contributed a goal and one assist, with Jason Rothwell, Nathan Carne, Demetri Breton and Matt Scopa also scored. Nick Armata and Cam Gold also had one helper, with goalie Dom Pappalardo making 17 saves.
