GIRLS TRACK
Essex Tech captures Voke title: Thanks to double winners Maci Abbatessa and Norah Kisiel, the Hawks finished with 118 team points, outlasting Southeastern Voke (83) and Diman (82.5) to capture the MVADA crown for the first time since 2019. Abbatessa won both the shot put (32 feet 6 incehs) and discus (94 feet 5 inches), while Kisiel earned top honors in the 100 (12.95 seconds) and 200 (26.36) as well as anchoring the 4×400 relay team to a school record, Nike National qualifying time of 4:15.15.
Olivia Feudo added a win in the 400 (1:02.60) for Essex Tech, as did freshman Emily Waters in the 2-mile (13:34.21). Kennedy Moyle (16-8 1/2 in the long jump, 2nd place), Brianna Caron (long jump, 16-4 1/2 for 5th place) and Greta Synder (javelin, 84-5 for 3rd place) also performed well.
Pingree takes fifth: At the Eastern Independent League meet, Pingree (75 team points) got a school record first place finish from Ashra Odiase in the shot put (36-6 1/4), as well as first place showings from Clare O’Holleran in the 100 high hurdles (16.07) and the 4×100 relay of Allie Donovan, Andi Ferry, Odiase and O’Holleran (52.6). O’Holleran also earned a second in the 300 IM (50.35) and third in the 100 (13.21), while Ferry was third in both the long jump (15-6 1/2) and 200 (27.68) and fourth in the 100 (13.29). The 4×400 relay of Olivia Botta, Sidney Reno, Kik Bable and Camryn Rafuse was also third (4:39.41).
Marblehead 67, Beverly 65: Grace Galbreath won three more events for the panthers, taking the long jump (17-5), low hurdles (71.3) and high hurdles (16.2). Sophomore Grace Williams also won the 400 (65.3), Chloe Bossler took the 800 (2:37), Samantha Fogarty won the javelin (personal best 81-2) and senior captain Vanessa Wiederhold took the triple (32-10).
BOYS TRACK
Beverly 89, Marblehead 47: Scott Kwiatek, a senior, broke the school record in the javelin with a toss of 148 feet 7 inches to lead the Panthers (4-2) to victory. Anthony Rust was a double winner in both the high jump and high hurdles, as was Harry Silva in both the long jump and triple jump. His younger brother, Charlie Silva, took second in both events as well as first place in the 400 hurdles. Colin Burns had his best throw of the season in the shot put (42-9) for Beverly, which saw Isaac Fryling win the 400 for his first win of the spring. Fellow junior Evan Wong ran a personal best to capture the 200 as well.
Pingree comes in fifth: Third place showings from Rex Braillard in the high jump (5-2) and Will Coughlin in the 1500 (4:35.19) helped the Highlanders take fifth place at the EIL Meet with 36 points. Teo Mahon (shot put, 38-8), Kai Roberge (1500, 4:36.71), Coughlin (800, 2:12.87) and the 4×100 relay of Chris Mariani, Fletcher Wilson, Christian Marsh and Braillard (47.41) all earned fourth place finishes.
BOYS LACROSSE
Marblehead 13, Masconomet 5: Cam Waldman scored four goals and a trio of Magicians — Will Sullivan (2 assists), Reece Moore, and Hogan Sedky — had two apiece in their Northeastern Conference triumph. Charlie Grenier, Jack Whipple and Bodie Smith had the other goals, with Wilson Bullard and Grady Becker adding assists and goalie Finn Gallup stopping nine shots.
Goaltender Jack Wheadon made 11 saves for Masconomet (now 6-8). Goals came from Colin Driscoll, Ben Miga, John Miga, Owen McNally and Will Carey, with Miles Mireault (2), Ben Miga and Driscoll adding assists.
Pingree 14, Landmark 4: Freshman Connor O’Neill had a goal and four assists while sophomore Jake Hiltz added two goals and two assists as the Highlanders improved to 9-7. Matt Tersolo and Wyatt Langway both had two goals, Bodie Cannata and Jack Abramson each finished with a goal and one helper, and Nick Johnson, Teddy Whipple, Christian Renaud, Jamie Book and Jasper Johnson also scored for the winners, with Kellan Danaher adding an assist and Finley McClintock winning 13-of-16 faceoffs.
Swampscott 22, Saugus 2: The Big Blue won for the 14th time in 15 games as a dozen players had at least one goal. Liam Keaney (4 goals, 5 assists), Chase Russo (2 goals, 6 assists), John Von Barta (4 goals, assist) and Jason Rothwell (3 goals, assist) all had big games for Swampscott, with Vaughn Hazell (2), Thomas Mello, Oli Graham, Will Bush, Max Field, Sam Brodsky, Jay Domelowicz and Jack Duffy also scoring. Jack Hazell added two assists, Field and Duffy one each, and goalies Timmy Sheehan and Joey Pilotte both made four saves in one half in net.
Winthrop 16, Salem 6: Despite 20 saves from freshman keeper Vince Milano, the Witches hurt themselves by allowing eight goals in the first period and were forced to play catch up the rest of the way. Mikey Curtin (3 goals, assist), Gabe Bennett (goal, assist), Andreas Bernal (goal), AJ Alessi (goal) and Max Levine Stein (assist) took care of the offense for Salem.
Bishop Stang 10, Bishop Fenwick 2: Nathan Ricciuti and Jack Simoneau had the goals for Fenwick (10-5) in a road setback.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Masconomet 16, Marblehead 6: Hannah Coleman’s five goals and six draw controls helped the Chieftains (now 7-8) race away from the Magicians. Caitlin Driscoll contributed three goals to the attach, with Grace Blaney, Violet Malinowski and Caleigh Fates providing two apiece. Single scores came from Sophia Farmer and Ava Gauvain.
Molly Bullard made seven saves for Marblehead (now 4-10), with Maddie Forbes scoring twice, assisting on two others, scooping three ground balls, earning three draw controls, and causing one turnover. Ramona Gillett added a goal and an assist, Kathryn Commoss scored twice, Rachel Delisle finished with one goal, and Courtney Hoguet had one assist.
Pentucket 22, Danvers 13: Savannah Botthof scored five goals with one assist, earning her 100th career point in the process, for the Falcons. Jordan Turcotte also had five goals and one helper, with Sienna Goldberg adding two goals and Maddie Chase one goal and one assist. Clara Cary picked up an assist as well as a team-high five ground balls.
SOFTBALL
Masconomet 15, Newton South 3: Junior Ava Allen led the Chieftains by going 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI and freshman Angie Vecchio had another nice outing at the plate, going 2-for-2 with three RBI.
Swampscott 12, Melrose 3: Delaney Miller had three hits and two RBI and Maddie Lilley added three hits in Swampscott’s 14 hit assault. Hayden Haskell chipped in a pair of triples with three RBI and Mia Tringale earned the win by whiffing 10 batters in a complete game five-hitter.
Peabody 20, Winthrop 0: Pitchers Avery Grieco (two innings, three strikeouts) and Abby Bettencourt (three innings, eight strikeouts) both hit home runs and combined for the shutout for the Tanners (9-2). Lizzy Bettencourt also crushed a round tripper while Logan Lomasney and Jaslyn Iraola had two hits each. Earning two RBI a piece were Payton Petrillo, JJ Emerson and Caitlin Burke as Peabody scored 14 times in the bottom of the first.
Danvers 7, Lowell Catholic 5: Sophomore Addi McCarty had a single, triple and turned an unassisted double play to lead the Falcons (now 9-5) to a non-league win. Senior Brea Robinson added two hits, scored twice, drove in a pair and stole a base for Danvers, which saw freshman Brooke Wilichoski break the game open with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth, snapping a 5-5 tie. Sophomore Autumn Buckley earned the win on the mound, allowing just three hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
Hamilton-Wenham 20, Rockport 2: Molly Degnan had a huge day for the Generals, belting a grand slam and also striking out seven hitters in five shutout innings. Degnan went 3-for-4 with five RBI while Maren Macaughey was 3-for-3 with three RBI and four runs, Ava Day tripled and scored four times and Bella Fazio went 3-for-43 with two RBI and two runs. Younger sister Viola Fazio was also 2-for-3 and freshman Sydney Smith drove in a pair.
Manchester Essex 9, Ipswich 3: Liv Driscoll had a double and an RBI for the Tigers and Anabel Morris struck out seven over seven innings of work.
GIRLS TENNIS
Beverly 5, Saugus 0: The Panthers (9-3) officially qualified for the state playoffs with wins by Adeline Kontos (6-0, 6-0), Olivia Devereaux (6-1, 6-0), Grace Adams (6-0, 6-0) and the teams of Clea Shumria and Ella McAleer (6-2, 6-0) as well as Sophia Gallo and Sophie Litterer (6-1/6-0).
Swampscott 5, Salem 0: The Big Blue cruised behind Anna Eccles (6-2, 6-1), Sasha Fafel (6-2,6-3), May Hood (6-2,6-2) and Victoria Quagrello and Sydney Antonelli (6-1, 6-1) and Ava and Alexia O’Donnell (6-0,6-0) in doubles.
Hamilton-Wenham 5, Pentucket 0: The Generals dispatched the Panthers with victories by Emma Jani (6-0, 6-0), Naomi Provost (6-0, 6-0), Emily McIntosh (6-2, 6-0) plus the teams of Maddie Minich and Angelina Meimeteas (6-1, 6-1) and Julia Maher and Sienna Gregory (6-0, 6-0).
Masconomet 4, Danvers 1: The defending D2 state champs knocked the Falcons from the unbeaten ranks with wins by Teagan Skulley (6-0, 6-3), Taylor Mastrogiovanni (6-0, 6-1) and by sweeping doubles play.
Marblehead 5, Peabody 0: On Senior Day, the Magicians got fine performances from Maddie Conlon (6-3, 6-4), Aviva Bornstein (6-2, 6-1) and Sami Dosch (6-2, 6-1). Seniors Aoife Bresnahan and Lucia Levin remained unbeaten in league play at first doubles, 6-1, 6-1, and Lani Gilmore and Reese Friedman also won, 6-2, 6-1.
Ipswich 3, North Reading 2: The Tigers won their sixth in a row with seniors Ella Niederhelman and Abbie Wallace winning a 2 1/2 hour marathon 67-, 7-6, 6-3 to clinch it. Senior Tess O’Flynn (6-2, 6-1) and the team of Norah Hickey and Charlotte Donahue (6-1, 6-4) also prevailed.
Bishop Fenwick 5, Cardinal Spellman 0: The Crusaders breezed to a road victory in Brockton behind wins from Gwen Schroeder (6-1, 6-0), Callie Reed (6-2, 6-1), Caroline O’Hare (6-0, 6-0), Lacey Murphy and Ari Summa (6-1, 6-1) and Jackie Dormer and Kit Wichroski (6-0, 6-1).
BASEBALL
Pingree 12, Landmark 3: Tyler Boviard struck out nine in four innings and the Highlanders (12-3) completed an undefeated EIL regular season. Jaylon Richardson homered and had three RBI, Dan Ferries drove in three runs, Hudson Weidman had two RBI and John Ogles and Max Guadin also recorded RBI.
Hamilton-Wenham 6, Essex Tech 4: Jack Cooke came on for the final 2 2/3 innings which were played Monday after this game was suspended due to a rain a few weeks earlier and closed out a win for the Generals (9-5). Cormac Heney was 3-for-3 in the game with four RBI and Chris Feron earned the win. The Hawks (1-14), who had to make several lineup changes due to players from the initial game being injured, saw Andrew McKenna drive in a run and got two perfect innings from Jack Tsoutsouras.
Marblehead 9, Bishop Fenwick 2: Brooks Keefe was 3-for-3 with four RBI and Chris Cannuscio had three hits of his own as the Magicians (10-2) erupted for six runs in the six to break the game open. Matt Mahan threw five solid innings for the win while Stef Shepard and Aidan Downey had two hits each.
Chris D’Angelo had two hits for the Crusaders (7-8) and Odin Garron hit a double.
St. John’s Prep 7, Catholic Memorial 1: Anthony Romano allowed a mere two hits over 6 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and the Eagles evened their record at 7-7. Gavin Gold led the offense with two his and a double while Will Shaheen, Jack Growney and Christian Rosa posted RBI. St. John’s scored six in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and grab the Catholic Conference win.
Peabody 4, Saugus 3: The Tanners (13-2) made it ten straight wins and celebrated Senior Day with 12th grader Remy Guerrero striking out a career-best nine batters in his first win of the season. Junior Dylan Annese came on for the final two outs and left a runner on second. Senior Steve Porcello had a key early RBI while Josh Sigmon was 3-for-3 with two RBI, Liam Hurley had a hit and scored and Mike Petro went 3-for-4.
Swampscott 6, Stoneham 5: Dawson DiBarri threw the final 2 1/2 and left the tying run on base as the Big Blue improved to 9-6 under the lights at DeFelice Diamond. Nick Berube hit a solo homer for Swampscott while Chase Groothuis had a pair of hits, Will Roddy drove in two runs and Jason Bouffard had one RBI. Jami Ford threw the first 4 1/3 to earn the victory with just two hits allowed.
Danvers 13, Gloucester 1: Mike Moroney took matters into his own hands for the Falcons, hitting a two-run homer, finishing with four RBI and striking out ten batters in a six inning two-hitter. Bryce Clark (three RBI) and Nick Robinson both hit two doubles for Danvers (4-10) and Adrian Lopez also drove home a pair.
BOYS TENNIS
St. John’s Prep 5, Malden Catholic 0: John DeAngelis, Jack Prokopis and Luke Free won by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores and the Eagles remained unbeaten at 13-0. The doubles teams of Wade Evitts/Charlie Weld and Chris Melville/Caran de Buy Wenniger also won in straight sets.
Swampscott 4, Salem 1: Winners for the Big Blue (10-2) were Charlies Schepens (6-0, 6-0), James Dicker (6-4, 6-1) and the tandems of Julian Flake/Lucas Breaud (6-1, 6-0) and Elijah Statlander and Tex Graph (6-0, 6-0). Salem’s winner was Brooks Workman at second singles, 6-2, 6-0.
