SOFTBALL
Danvers 18, Salem 2: The Falcons (11-6) won their fourth straight by banging out 16 hits in five innings led by Kyla Moroney (4-for-4, 2 doubles, 5 runs), Lila Flynn (3-for-4, 4 RBI) and Addi McCarty (2-for-2, 3 RBI). Skylar Coakley added three hits and two RBI while striking out 10 Witches over the complete game 2-hitter.
For Salem (7-9), Barbara Rowley had a hit with an RBI, Faith Sanchez-Schroeder had a hit and scored a run, Julia Gauthier had a double and Liv Loux reached base and scored a run.
Masconomet 18, Swampscott 4: Ally Kelter had a 5-for-5 afternoon with five RBI and Masconomet (8-8) enjoyed its best offensive day of the season with an incredible 22 hits. Angie Vecchio (3 runs) and Delilah Katsos (3 runs, 2 RBI) had three hits each, Aimee Quimby and Sabrina Cafarelli had two each and Masconomet scored seven in the fourth and six more in the sixth to break the game wide open. Cece O’Connor had the highlight for the Big Blue, hitting a 2-run homer in the bottom of the first.
Marblehead 12, Winthrop 0: Tessa Francis scattered two hits over five innings of work, striking out nine to keep the Magicians rolling. Sophomore Kelian Salem threw two scoreless innings of relief with one strikeout. Offensively, Luka Bornhost went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and four RBI while Lyla McGovern (2-for-3), Nora Mahan (2-for-4), Hailey Schmitt (2-for-4) and Tessa Andriano (2-for-5, 2 RBI) also helped fill up the scorebook.
Saugus 11, Peabody 4: Junior captain Lizzy Bettencourt’s 11th homer of the season was a 3-run blast that put Peabody (8-11) on top in the fifth, but Saugus scored six times in the bottom of the sixth to upset the Tanners. Jess Steed and Gabby Gosselin each had two hits for Peabody, which was out-hit 17-8 on the day.
North Reading 12, Hamilton-Wenham 2: Bianca Fredrickson doubled and drove in a run for the Generals, who fell to 8-9. Viola Fazio scored a run while Annie Soleimani, Maren McCaughey and Sydney Smith had H-W’s other base hits.
Pentucket 20, Ipswich 0: The Tigers (2-15) dropped their fifth straight with just one game remaining against rival Hamilton-Wenham later this week.
BASEBALL
Marblehead 4, Winthrop 0: Ian McComish allowed only one hit over six innings and struck out eight as the Magicians (9-10) kept their state tournament hopes alive. Colt Wales went 2-for-2 with two runs, Owen Coyne doubled and Cam Quigley drove in a pair as Marblehead scored three in the bottom of the first to seize control.
Masconomet 5, Swampscott 1: RBI singles by Aidan Brown and Nate Antonakes in the fourth put the Chieftains (8-8) ahead in a battle with the Big Blue (7-10) that had tourney implications for both sides. Zach Ward struck out eight over 6 1/3 innings of work to post the win for Masconomet while Liam Ginley doubled and Drew Gustafson tripled and scored twice.
Nick Berube singled in Caden Ross with the lone run for Swampscott and David Palmer allowed just one hit over 3 1/3 in a tough luck defeat.
Salem 11, Danvers 5: Shea Christel had three hits, Xavier Pacheco drove in two runs and Jordan O’Malley and Yan Ruiz had two hits each as the Witches (9-7) scored six times between the second and third innings to upset the Falcons (8-9) under the lights at Twi Field. Kevin Soto struck out seven Falcons in five innings of work and Jack Tsoutsouras polished off the win.
Danvers was led offensively by Parker Hamel (triple) and got RBI from Bryce Clark, Logan Travers and Chase Richmond.
Hopkins School 4, Pingree 1: Ty Boviard’s sac fly plated Drew Mullaney (single) to tie the game in the sixth, but No. 5 seed Hopkins scored three in the eight to down the Highlanders (12-5) in the New England Small School playoff quarterfinal round. Boviard was exceptional on the mound, allowing one hit and one earned over six innings with six strikeouts, and each side had just three hits in the game. Ethan Rich threw five out of no-hit, scoreless relief while seniors Dan Ferris and Cole Piaseczynski had Pingree’s other hits.
St. Mary’s Lynn 10, St. John’s Prep 1: The Eagles (10-6) got knocked around a bit at Fraser Field, conceding six runs in the fourth as the game got away. Sophomore Jimmy DiCarlo had the Prep’s lone RBI and one of his team’s five hits while James Willett singled and scored and Nic Lembo hit a double.
Gloucester 5, Beverly 1: Maverick Genst gave the Panthers (9-7) a chance to hand Gloucester its first NEC loss of the year, pitching into the sixth in a 1-1 ballgame that saw the Fishermen take the lead with four runs over the last two frames. Charles Salerno’s RBI double in the first put Beverly ahead and Jonah Bellew’s double was the home team’s only other hit on the afternoon.
Lynnfield 11, Essex Tech 6: Jacoby Casinelli Tarasuik had three hits, Xavier Parsons had two and Jose Pagan drove in a run but the Hawks (9-10) lost their Cape Ann League finale against the Kinney champs. Essex Tech must win Tuesday against Saugus to assure itself of a D3 state tourney berth.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
New Bedford 3, Essex Tech 0: The Hawks fell in straight sets on their home court to the powerful Whalers.
GIRLS TENNIS
Hamilton-Wenham 5, North Reading 0: The Generals (13-2) celebrated Senior Day with wins by Naomi Provost (6-1, 6-1), Emily McIntosh (6-0, 6-1), Charlotte Ireland (6-0, 6-0), Olivia Romans and Evelyn Esdaile (6-1, 6-3) and Tessa Hunt and Sadie Gamber (6-0, 6-0).
Danvers 5, Salem 0: All five matches were decided by 6-0, 6-0 scored as the Falcons improved to 12-6. Winners were Madison Savage, Sophie Sanidas, Josie Vogel plus the teams of Ava Nadeau and Raina Langlois as well as Cali Coffin and Paige Sherman.
Swampscott 3, Masconomet 2: Freshman Nikki Carr pulled off an three-set tiebreaking upset win over Teagan Skulley in first singles, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6-2)mto give the Big Blue a huge victory. Lilly Carr also won her singles match in three sets for Swampscott (6-3, 3-6, 603), and in a three-hour marathon, the second doubles team of Sasha Fafel and Janielle de la Cruz also prevailed, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Beverly 5, Gloucester 0: The Panthers earned a bounce back victory behind Adeline Kontos (6-0, 6-0), Grace Adams(2-6, 6-1, 6-2) and Olivia Devereaux (6-0, 6-2) in singles play plus the doubles squads of Sophia Gallo & Ella McAleer (6-3, 6-2) and Claire Fitzgerald & Sopie Litterer (6-0, 6-2).
Marblehead 5, Winthrop 0: Caroline Crosby stepped in at first singles for the Magicians, doing what head coach Tracey Ackerman termed “an outstanding job” in producing a 6-1, 6-2. Joy Meshulam (6-0, 6-2) and Zoi Guzzini (6-1, 6-1) prevailed at second and third singles, respectively, for Marblehead, with Callie Gilmore and Caroline Bruett (6-0, 6-0) winning at first singles, and Eliana Berger and Erin Wilder also taking home a victory (6-1, 6-1).
Peabody 4, Saugus 1: The Tanners saw Anna Maciel and Artemis Greko (6-0, 6-1) roll at first doubles, with Izabella Pereira and Yasnelly Fernandez adding another win at second doubles (6-3, 6-3) to highlight their team victory. First singles player Valentina Goga breezed, 6-0, 6-0, while Alexandra Kourtelidis used mental toughness and poise to rally and pull out a three-set victory, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Newburyport 4, Ipswich 1: The Tigers (11-4) played a lot of competitive matches in windy conditions but the lone victory came from the first doubles team of Lila Borgman and Sophie Johannknecht, who capped off an undefeated Cape Ann League season with a 6-4, 7-5 decision.
BOYS TENNIS
St. John’s Prep 4, BC High 1: The Eagles (16-0 overall) finished 10-0 in Catholic Conference competition to capture the league crown and won its 40th consecutive match in league play. All three singles players won as Rudr Malayya (6-2, 6-3), Jack Prokopis (6-0, 6-2) and Luke Free (6-0, 6-1) all earned points for St. John’s Prep, which also got a victory at second doubles from James deBuy Wenniger and Wade Evitts (6-1. 7-5).
Newburyport 5, Ipswich 0: The Tigers took a loss in their second-to-last bout before the upcoming state tournament.
Marblehead 5, Gloucester 0: The Magicians swept in very windy conditions with wins by Etan Farfel (6-0, 6-3), Matt Sherf (6-0, 6-1), Austin Bacon (6-0, 6-0) as well as the teams of Anthony Vizy/Ty Cooper (6-1, 6-0) and Leo Winocour/TJ Kelly (6-1, 6-0).
Swampscott 5, Beverly 0: Singles winners for the Big Blue inluded Sam Schepens (6-1, 6-1), Victor Zeissig (6-1, 7-5) and Julian Flacke (6-1, 6-3). In doubles, Elijah Statlander and Daniel Wabno prevailed (6-1, 7-6), as did Alex Levine and Cal Tierney (6-1, 6-0).
Lowell Catholic 4, Danvers 1: Jack Scarpaci was a winner for the Falcons at third singles, taking a hard earned three-set 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 triumph.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Lynnfield 11, Essex Tech 10: Janelle Dalton scored three times with one assist and goalie Frankie Roper made six saves while allowing just four goals in a setback for the Hawks. Sydney Mace and Morgan Costa both added two goals for the locals, with Bella Vetrano, Gabby Adie and Makayla Downing also scoring. Assists went to Carrie Martinez and Kayla Perez.
BOYS LACROSSE
Salem 13, Somerville 5: Terrific team ball movement helped Andreas Bernal come up with five goals and three assists as the Witches improved to 6-10. Jake Lister also had himself a game, scoring three times and adding three assists. AJ Alessi (2 goals, assist), Mikey Curtin (goal, 2 assists) and Fionn Coughlin (goal, assist) also scored for Salem, with goaltender Vincent Milano stopping a dozen shots.
Essex Tech 15, Lynnfield 12: The two-pronged offensive attack of Mason Gadbois (5 goals, assist) and Timothy Tavares (goal, 7 assists) held the Hawks earn a clutch victory in their push for the Division 3 playoffs. Casey Collins did as well, scoring four times to go with one assist, as did Nevin Maher (2 goals, 3 assists). Goaltender Joe Dresser was immense in making 16 saves, while Luke Began won five faceoffs and scooped six ground balls, and Hadden Amico had six GBs and five faceoff wins. Other scorers for Essex Tech (now 8-8) included Chase Ruberti (3 goals, assist), Tyler McHugh (assist) and Jack Hanchett (assist).
Ipswich 12, Whittier 4: Five goals and an assist from Finn Wright plus three goals and one assist each by Vin Winter and Luke Wile enabled the Tigers to improve to 11-3. Spencer McDavitt also scored for the winners, who got three assists from Louie Harrington and 10 saves by Connor Wright.
Triton 11, Hamilton-Wenham 9: The Generals narrowly missed picking up their second straight win. Billy Brown (assist) and Zach Sachsel both scored three times for Hamilton-Wenham (now 1-14), with Charlie Convey, Drew Tersolo and Tyler Arvidson all connecting once. Jackson Pitkin made eight saves in net.
Pentucket 10, Peabody 3: Two goals from Steven Brown and 21 saves by goalie Aidan Haight weren’t enough to lift the Tanners (6-11) to victory. Antonio Anzalone had the other Peabody goal, with Derek Collins and Mason Clickstein picking up solo assists.
