GIRLS TENNIS
Danvers 5, Peabody 0: The Falcons breezed in their season opener as Josie Vogel (6-0, 6-1), Paige Sherman (6-0, 6-1) and Isabel Beaudoin (6-0, 6-0) won in singles play, with the doubles teams of Hadley Brown/Claire Lyman (6-2, 6-0) and Avarie Hertigan/Ari Fajardo (6-4, 7-5) completing the sweep.
Beverly 4, North Andover 1: The Panthers went on the road and came home victorious in their season opener. The first doubles team of Sophie Litterer and Clair Fitzgerald grabbed a 6-0, 6-4 win, followed by Caroline Kearney and Lilanna Jiminez at second doubles, 6-3, 6-4. Singles wins came from Adeline Kontos (6-0, 6-0) and Olivia Deveraux (6-0, 6-1).
Masconomet 3, Marblehead 2: Wins at first and third singles, plus second doubles, enabled the Chieftains to win at home on a blustery day. Sophomores Ria Kundaliya (6-2, 6-4) and Ava Zarrineh (6-1, 6-1) took straight set victories in singles, while junior Ella Mossey and freshman Cyra Anvari took home a satisfying 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 triumph. Callie Gilmore won for Marblehead as did the team of senior captains Joy Meshulam and Caroline Bruett.
Ipswich 3, Manchester Essex 2: Victories at third singles and both doubles matches on a windy day enabled the host Tigers (now 2-0) to knock off the perennial state powerhouse. The first doubles team of junior Sarah Belford and senior Tea Princi clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) triumph. Eve Melzach and Anna Kalinowski, both juniors, also prevailed at second doubles, 6-2, 6-2, as did sophomore Phoebe Allen at third singles, 6-3, 7-5. Sophomore Mae Borgman and Leila Harb both played well at first and second singles, respectively, before falling.
Hamilton-Wenham 5, Amesbury 0: At its brand new tennis facility on campus, the three-time defending state champion Generals christened it with a sweep. Emily McIntosh (6-3, 6-3), freshman Krishna Guruju (6-1, 6-1, her first varsity win) and Charlotte Ireland (6-0, 6-0) prevailed in singles, with the doubles teams following suit in Gabriella Jewitt and freshman Madeline Fennell (6-1, 6-1), plus Evelyn Esdaile and Sofie Greene (6-0, 6-0).
Swampscott 5, Saugus 0: The Big Blue began their season in fine form with a straight set sweep. Nikki Carr (6-0, 6-0), Ginger Gregoire (6-1, 6-0) and Ana Eccles (6-0, 6-0) all took home wins at singles play, while the tandems of Ava O’Donnell and Alexia O’Donnell (6-1, 6-1) and Sasha Fafel and Lilly Carr (6-2, 6-1) did likewise in doubles competition.
BOYS TENNIS
Marblehead 3, Masconomet 2: With wins at first and second singles as well as first doubles, the Magicians gave new head coach Karl Tenenholtz his first win. Ty Cooper (6-3, 6-2) won at first singles, TJ Kelly (6-3, 6-0) did likewise at second singles, and Adam Loughlin and Filip Wabno grinded out a 7-5, 7-5 victory at first doubles.
Danvers 4, Lynn Classical 1: Falcons Jack Scarpaci (6-0, 6-2) and Connor DiTomaso (6-0, 6-1) took care of business in the first two singles spots while the doubles teams of Jack Chronis and Anthony Gaudino (6-0, 6-1), as well as Evan Sewyck and Drew Maioli (6-1, 6-0) cruised to easy wins.
Manchester Essex 5, Ipswich 0: The Tigers got some strong play in defeat from Nathaniel Pitner, who went three sets, and Yianni Nikolaou, who went down 7-6,7-5.
Swampscott 3, Bishop Fenwick 2: Senior captains Sam Schepens and Julian Flacke won in straight sets for the Big Blue while classmate Victor Zeissig sealed the win by taking the No. 2 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph.
BOYS LACROSSE
Ipswich 17, Triton 1:Senior Connor Wright (9 saves) came a few minutes shy of his first career shutout while his brother Finn scored six goals, putting him over 200 points for his career, to propel the Tigers to a blowout win. Luke Wile added two goals and two assists; Louie Harrington, Trevor Manning, and Gavin Pulsifer all added two goals; and single scores came from Travis Wilson, Michael Beaudin and Miles Mattox.
Hamilton-Wenham 14, Essex Tech 4: Sophomore attack Zac Sachsel (4 goals, assist), as well as junior midfielders Reid Faldi (3 goals, assist) and Billy Brown (3 goals), spearheaded the offense as the Generals (2-1) bounced back nicely from their first setback of the season. Freshman attack Leo Tratnyek scored his first two varsity goals for H-W, with junior Andrew Wilbur and LSM Kyle Russo also scoring, and eighth grader Aiden LaSelva earned two assists. Jackson Pitkin (3 saves) and Joe Hughes (4 saves) split the game in net.
The Hawks (now 0-3) got two goals from Quinn Makry, one each from Tyler McHugh and Casey Collins, with Chase Ruberti (2) and Collins picking up assists. Connor Lacey made 9 saves, with Quinn Woodson finishing up with four stops of his own.
Pingree 15, Brooks 3: The Highlanders got little resistance in improving to 2-1. Connor O’Neill erupted for four goals and three assists, buoyed by another four goals and one helper from Henry Card. Jake Hiltz (2 goals, assist), Nick Donovan (goal, 2 assists), Christian Renaud (goal, 2 assists), Matt Tersolo (goal, assist), Colin Driscoll (goal, assist), Massimo DeSantis (goal) and Andrew Tersolo (assist) all got into the scorebook, with Finley McClintock winning 18-of-22 faceoffs. Marcello Amadeo needed to make just two stops in the win.
Archbishop Williams 6, Bishop Fenwick 5: Two goals and an assist from captain CJ Masone, a goal and two assists from Dylan Patturelli, and single tallies from Jake Grennert and Logan Connolly weren’t enough to push the Crusaders (now 2-2) to victory. Liam Kelsch made 10 saves in net while backup keeper Ryan Zepaj had a pair of stops.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Beverly 18, Marblehead 2: as the Panthers scored 15 first-half goals en route to a convincing Northeastern Conference victory. Sophomore CC Blank and freshman Charlotte Bilotti each scored their first varsity goals for the Orange-and-Black, who got three goals apiece from Gwen Jones, Madeline LeBlanc and Ashley Wallace. Sasha Miller finished with 10 draw controls in addition to two goals and three assists. Freshmen Marisa Hutton and Meghan Potter both excelled on the draw for the winners, who had Maddie Reynolds and Megan McCormack split the game in net.
Addy Co Peeps had a goal and an assist for Marblehead (now 1-2), with Zoe Dwyer also scoring.
Ipswich 15, Triton 3: Allie Wile (2 assists) and Ella McCarthy both scored three goals while three different goalies — Sydney Leonard, Vivan Bodycombe and Miranda Baran — had saves in Ipswich’s easy win. Other scoring came off the sticks of Ella Schofield (2 goals, assist), Maddie Machaiek (goal, 3 assists), Taryn O’Brien (goal, 2 assists), Keira McPartlin (goal, 2 assists), Natalie Elder (goal, assist), Asuka Keough (goal), Jules Rafferty (goal) and Amani Makuwa (goal).
Hamilton-Wenham 14, Essex Tech 5: Jane Boardman led the offense with five goals and an assist to keep the Generals unbeaten at 3-0. Evie Bernard finished with four goals, an assist and nine draw controls for the winners, with Grace Glidden adding two goals and two DCs. Bailey Shepherd and Margot Bryce Morris (3 DCs) each contributed a goal and an assist, Samantha Nevins also scored, and Rowan Sheckells (6 saves) and Hazel McWilliams (3 saves) both saw time between the pipes.
SOFTBALL
Marblehead 9, Bishop Fenwick 3: Tessa Francis spun a five-hitter with a dozen strikeouts, enabling the Magicians to win their third game in as many tries this spring. She also delivered a two-run double in the fourth inning. Left fielder Nora Mahan and Tessa Andriano each went 2-for-3 for the winners, with Lucy Rogers reaching base three times and driving in a pair. Grace Dow, Hailey Schmitt, Isabel Mortensen, Ashley Mortensen and Kate Andriano also hit safely.
Masconomet 11, Peabody 4: Five different players had two hits for the Chieftains, who had 11 in all and played terrific defense to pick up the win against their conference rivals. JJ Emerson provided an RBI double for the Tanners (1-1), who also got hits from Lizzy Bettencourt, Liv Guarino (two runs), Kaylee DiNicola and Gabby Gosselin, but couldn’t stop the bleeding after Masconomet (1-1) scored seven in the top of the first.
Beverly 16, Danvers 1: Lidia Miedema not only scattered five hits and struck out nine on the mound, but the junior also went 3-for-3 offensively with a double and two RBI as the Panthers rolled in their season opener. Senior captain Meredith Johnston went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and drove home three teammates; Avery LeBlanc was 2-for-2 with a pair of ribbies; and Lila Maker smacked a two-run double.
Freshman Maddi Fuller allowed three hits in 3 1/3 innings with five walks and four strikeouts for Danvers. Offensively, Briley Keezer went 2-for-3 and fellow junior Brooke Wilichoski was 1-for-3 and drove in her team’s lone run.
Essex Tech 7, Triton 6: Starting pitcher Ali Giannetti helped herself by blasting a three-run homer while reliever Ella Gasinowski came in to shut the door and finish off a satisfying win for the Hawks over their Cape Ann League rivals. Mya Jagodinski had a two-run double to bring home the tying and game-winning runs, with Ava Mora crossing home the winning run.
Georgetown 5, Ipswich 0: Julia Hubbard and Lola Morley each had two hits for the Tigers and Ava Poire also hit safely. Aurelia Teheen took the loss, pitching 5 2/3 strong innings giving up just four hits and catcher Olivia Driscoll threw out a runner attempting to steal.
Hamilton-Wenham 17, Amesbury 6: Viola Fazio had four of her team’s 16 hits to go with five runs and two RBI as the Generals moved to 2-0. Biance Fredrickson had four RBI and two doubles among her three hits and Mia Broyles and Sydney Smith both also knocked in a pair.
BASEBALL
Bishop Fenwick 12, Swampscott 5: Odin Garron hit a 3-run homer in the top of the seventh and Andrew Kiricoples provided three hits, two RBI and struck out six in five innings of work as the Crusaders started the year with a victory. Timmy Ronningen held off the Big Blue (1-1) for the last two frames and Henry Van Faasen also knocked home a pair of runs.
Michal Collins hit a 3-run bomb of his own for Swampscott while Chase Groothuis, Caden Ross and Connor Chiarello each chipped in two hits.
St. John’s Prep 9, Malden Catholic 7: Jimmy DiCarlo hit two doubles and knocked in three runs and the Eagles (2-1) had to hang on late after building a 7-1 lead. Brady Baldassare also had two hits and scored three times while Maxwell Parent, Christian McCarthy and Brendan Kobierski all stayed hit with two hits apiece.
Pingree 4, Brooks 0: Jonah Richardson and Jack Spear combined for a 4-hit shutout in an impressive victory for the Highland Nine. Matt McDonald led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a run while Ben Chisholm hit an RBI double and Aiden Perez and Drew Mullaney also had hits.
Arlington Catholic 2, Ipswich 1: Brady Merry struck out eight in the complete game effort but the Tigers (0-1) dropped a pitcher’s duel. Aaron Guarino had two hits on the day and Merry drove in Ipswich’s lone run in the top of the first.
Triton 11, Salem 5: Sandy Arendall went 3-for-3 with three RBI and the Wiches (0-1) were ahead after one but couldn’t keep pace with the Vikings. Shea Christel also had two hits but Salem had just three other base knocks on the day.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
St. John’s Prep 3, Xaverian 0: Senior Brendan McCarthy had 11 kills and 15 digs and the Eagles earned their first win with a 25-17, 25-9, 25-21 sweep. Senior Matt Nazzaro added six kills and nine digs and sophomore Drew Lubas handed out 14 assists. Freshman Ben LaRochelle also had a nice match with 12 assists and three aces.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE
Johnson & Wales 17, Salem State 4: The Vikings (8-1) were knocked from the unbeaten ranks in decisive fashion after being shut out in the first half. Jordan Turcotte and Laura Young both score twice for SSU.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Salem State sweeps: Gracie Martineau spun a 1-hit shutout and Salem State improved to 15-8 by beating St. Joseph Conn. 2-0 after taking a 4-2 win earlier in the day. Emma Quinn had both RBI in the 2-0 win and Abby LeClair had two key RBI in the first game of the double dip.
