BOYS LACROSSE
Salem 14, Lynn 5: Senior captain Mikey Curtin fired home five goals and sophomore midfielder Fionn Coughlin added two tallies and four assists to give the Witches a satisfying season opening victory. Captain Andreas Bernal and fellow senior Gabe Bennett produced two goals apiece, with AJ Alessi (4 assists), Jaiden Ortiz (1 assist) and Matt Rosa scoring one goal each. Rosa and Ortiz combined for 15 faceoff wins as well, with sophomore goalkeeper Vincent Milano stopping 14 shots.
Methuen 12, Beverly 2: Talan Rafter and Will Burgess scored the goals for the Panthers in their season opener, while Chris McKie picked up an assist.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Ipswich 9, North Andover 6: Allie Wile had three goals and produced five turnoers while Lucy Winthrop and Lyla Greenleaf each added two goals and one helper to give the Tigers a season opening triumph. Natalie Elder (assist) and Ella McCarthy also ripped the twine for IHS, which got outstanding defensive performances from goalie Emma Paquette (7 saves), Avery Brown (5 caused turnovers), Jade Wilcox (2 caused turnovers), Ella Schofield (2 caused turnovers), Faith Hauenstein and Maddie Hanson.
Manchester Essex 10, Marblehead 7: In a terrific non-league battle, the Magicians got four goals and an assist from captain Maddie Forbes and 12 saves in net from Molly Bullard in a close setback. Kathryn Commoss added a pair of goals for Marblehead, which also got a tally from Ramona Gillett plus two assists each from Caitlyn Ryan and Zoe Dwyer. Sammy Walker (2 ground balls) and freshman Maggie Svencer also played well.
GIRLS TENNIS
Danvers 4, Manchester Essex 1: The Falcons began the year on a terrific note with a solid non-league victory against a perennial power. Sophie Sanidas played the match of the day, grinding out a 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory at second singles. Madison Savage (6-3, 6-4) and Josie Vogel (6-0, 6-0) were also triumphant in singles action for Danvers, as were Cali Coffin and Paige Sherman in doubles (6-4, 6-2).
SOFTBALL
Manchester Essex 8, Swampscott 6: The Big Blue totaled up nine hits but couldn’t take full advantage of three Hornet errors in a high-scoring, back-and-forth opening day affair.
VOLLEYBALL
St. John’s Prep 3, North Andover 0: The Eagles breezed to victory on their home court, claiming a sweep with a 25-18, 25-17, 29-27 decision.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Salem State 10, Colby-Sawyer 8: Scoring seven runs between the fifth and sixth innings helped the host Vikings improve to 6-8 on the season. Peter Moor and Ethan Supplettis both knocked home three runs for the winners, while Nolan Currier had a pair of hits and scored three times. Salem native Riley Fenerty went five innings in relief to pick up the win on the mound, with Jake Boucher earning the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
