GYMNASTICS
Beverly 132.4, Danvers 121.75: Carli Moran of the Panthers took first place on the uneven bars (9.6), balance beam (9.1) and floor exercises (9.4) while tying for second place on vault (9.0), winning the evening’s all-around crown at 37.1 as the Orange-and-Black prevailed in a battle of state powerhouses.
Fiona Bazin also had a big night for Beverly after taking third in the all-around (31.75), with a third place showing on vault (8.9) and a solid 7.6 on bars. Tilly Mandelbaum added an 8.8 on vault and 8.3 on floor for BHS, with teammate Savannah Hathaway scoring an 8.2 on floor.
Danvers was led by Delaney Murphy, won won the vault (9.15), was second on bars (8.7), beam (8.45) and floor (9.3) and second in the all-around (35.6). Sophia Catinazzo tied for second on vault (9.0) and was third on floor (8.4) for the Falcons; teammates Maddy St. Pierre (bars, 8.0) and Ollie Marshal (beam, 7.85) also claimed third place finishes.
Hamilton-Wenham 137.6, Bishop Fenwick 123.1: Freshman Wren Romiza broke a 21-year-old program record on the beam by scoring a 9.8 and also set a new H-W standard in the all-around with a 37.25, surpassing a 20-year-old mark. Fellow freshman Brooke Woods scored 9.0 on vault and H-W also got strong contributions from seniors Amelia Franklin, Evelyn Durey, Elida Carr and Savannah Gauron.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Peabody 54, Salem Academy 45: Sophomore Thad Broughton had a huge game with 24 points, 12 rebounds and three assists to lead the Tanners to their second win of the season. Dom Domenici was also in double figures with 10 points, with Mark Mendonca scoring seven while pulling down 10 rebounds and coming up with six steals. Peabody (now 2-6) also got an additional 10 rebounds from Ian Salazar, plus six points from Adam Kowalczyk.
St. Mary’s Lynn 75, Masconomet 61: In a battle of unbeatens, the Chieftains fell for the first time this season as the hosts went on a 29-16 run to snap a tie ballgame. Senior captain Jimmy Farrell led all scorers with 28 points for Masconomet (now 5-1). Thomas Denton finished with a dozen points while Jamason Vella scored eight points and paced his squad with nine rebounds.
St. Mary’s (now 9-0) saw four players finish in double figures, led by Rolky Brea Arias with 19, John Chareas with 18 and Jake Fortier scoring 17.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Peabody 48, Lincoln-Sudbury 43: The Tanners climbed back into the win column behind Olivia Gaynor, who scored 17 points to go along with five steals in this non-league decision. Sophia Coburn (8 points, 7 rebounds) and Aliana Ryan (6 points, 7 assists, 5 steals) also had well-rounded games for Peabody (now 5-3), with Lizzie Bettencourt adding 10 rebounds and six points while Avery Bettencourt also had six points and four steals.
Ipswich 52, Salem 2: Freshman Victoria Eaton, a guard, led the Tigers in scoring with eight points as her team won for the fourth time in its last five contests. Senior guard Keira McPartlin added seven points and was strong on the glass for Ipswich (now 4-5), with sophomore Regan McPartlin adding six points. Sophomore guard Zao Scarano also had six points and was stellar defensively for IHS, and freshman guard Juls Rafferty also produced six points.
Hamilton-Wenham 53, Whittier 50: Down big (by 18 points) for the second straight contest, the Generals clamped down defensively and hit five 3-pointers in the second half to rally for a dramatic triumph. Margot Bryce Morris scored a career high 30 points, including going 10-for-15 from the charity stripe, to pace H-W (now 4-5). Asa Labell buried a trio of threes and Mia Lougee hit two more.
Notre Dame Academy 43, Marblehead 39: Greta Sachs paced the Magicians with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Ainsley MacDonald added nine points for Marblehead (now 4-3); Tessa Andriano finished with five points and seven rebounds, and Carys Moran scored four points.
BOYS HOCKEY
Newburyport 3, Masconomet 2 (OT): Junior Nick Vetrano potted his first two varsity goals, both coming in the third period, and goalie Jacob Sofronas made 28 saves as the Chieftains lost a nailbiter at Graf Rink in Newburyport. Jack Wheadon and Drew Nelson each had one assist, while captain Brendan Sheehan and fellow defenseman Seamus Cronin both had excellent games.
Medford 5, Bishop Fenwick 1: The Crusaders fell below .500 at 4-5 after their road defeat. Defenseman Noah Hammond had an unassisted goal for Fenwick, with goalie Alex Anticevic making 21 saves.
GIRLS SKIIING
Masconomet takes two: Emily Stearns’ had the Chieftains top time down on the mountain on the day, racing downhill in 22.32 seconds as her team defeated both Newburyport (70-65) and Haverhill (79-56). Hannah Mitchell (22.54) and Violet Malinowski (22.73) also broke 23 seconds for Masconomet, with Aida Pagilerani (23.36) and Zoe Chen (23.53) also putting forth strong showings.
Hamilton-Wenham 78, Manchester Essex 57: The Generals took six of the top nine spots as far as top times go to take down the Hornets at Bradford Ski Area. Evie Bernard finished second overall in 22.44, followed by H-W teammates Molly Ryan (4th, 22.62), Maren McCaughey (6th, 23.03), Sydney Smith (7th, 23.08), Samantha Bielek (8th, 23.21) and Samantha Nevins (9th, 24.42).
GIRLS WRESTLING
Salem has three first place finishes: At the Brendan Grant Memorial Tournament Sunday, the Witches saw three of their wrestlers stand atop the podium. Senior captain Alexia Coleman won top honors at 132 pounds, while fellow seniors Mariam Aleksanyan (138 lbs.) and Maria Melo (185 lbs.) also claimed first place finishes. Freshman Faustina Isiguzo also had a fine showing, placing third at 126 pounds.
