GIRLS TENNIS
Beverly 3, Marblehead 2: The Panthers picked up their first victory over Marblehead in a long time as the second doubles unit of Sophia Gallo and Elina Savola rebounded for a 4-6 first set loss to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-4, and give their team the win. Adeline Kontos (6-1, 6-4) and Olivia Devereaux (6-4, 6-4) prevailed at first and second singles, respectively, for the Orange-and-Black.
Marblehead got its victories from third singles player Sami Dosch (6-3, 6-2) and the doubles team of Aoife Bresnahan and Lucia Levin (6-3, 6-1).
Swampscott 3, Pentucket 2: Anna Eccles was a winner at first singles (6-1, 6-3) for the Big Blue, as was the first doubles team of Victoria Quagrello and Noelle Diehl (6-4, 6-3) in addition to Ava and Alexia O’Donnell at second doubles (6-3, 6-1). Sydney Antonelli also had an excellent match at second singles for Swampscott, losing a 10-7 third set tiebreaker.
Ipswich 5, Rockport 0: The Tigers improved to 1-1 with a convincing victory on their home courts. Claire Buletza, Abbie Allen and Tess O’Flynn each picked up wins in singles play, with the doubles teams of Norah Hickey and Lila Borgman, as well as Frannie Hertz and Emily Hannibal, each won their matches without dropping a game.
Hamilton-Wenham 5, Amesbury 0: The Generals dropped a mere two games all afternoon in improving to 2-0. Emma Jani and Naomi Provost both won 6-0, 6-0, with third singles player Ellie Holbrook also breezing to a 6-0, 6-1 win. Emily McIntosh and Sienna Gregory swept their first doubles match, with Julia Maher and Sydney Dolan earning a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at second doubles.
Danvers 5, Saugus 0: Sweeping the action for the Falcons was Madison Savage (6-0, 6-0), Sophie Sanidas (6-0, 6-1), Josie Vogel (6-0, 6-2) and the teams of Ava Nadeau/Raina Langlais (6-2, 6-1) and Kelly Huynh/Cali Coffin (6-0, 6-1).
Manchester Essex 3, Bishop Fenwick 2: Winners for the Crusaders were Gwen Schroeder (6-4, 6-2) and Callie Reed (6-7, 7-5, 11-9) in singles play.
Masconomet 5, Gloucester 0: The defending state champs cruised behind wins by Teagan Skulley (6-0, 6-0), Taylor Mastrogiovanni (6-0, 6-2) and Maya Klink (6-0, 6-2) plus the teams of Sienna Anvari/Sophia Donnellan (6-0, 6-0) and Izzy Kelly/Paige Hurton (6-1, 6-1).
Peabody 5, Salem 0: The Tanners got wins from senior captains Jessica Chau (6-3, 6-3) and Yasmine Giacalone (6-2, 6-2) in addition to senior Vanessa Kola (6-0, 6-2) in singles action. The winning doubles teams were captains Jill McGrath/Theodosia Kourtelidis (6-2, 6-2) and seniors Argiro Psyhogios/Tori McCoy (6-2, 6-2).
BASEBALL
Beverly 8, Methuen 4: Micah McManus struck out eight over four innings and Beverly earned its first official win of the season. Charlie Salerno had two hits and two runs scored, captain Mike Giello had two hits and Connor Connolly (two innings) and Graham Gavin (two strikeouts) combined to finish off the Rangers.
St. John’s Prep 5, St. John’s Shrewsbury 4: Tyler Spears’ pinch-hit single in the bottom of the sixth plated pinch-runner Christian Rosa and the Eagles scored the last five runs of the game to win after falling behind 4-0. Braeden Hurley picked up the win out of the bullpen and Gavin Gold and Jack DiFillpio both had two run doubles in the sixth where SJP scored all of its runs.
Bishop Feehan 8, Bishop Fenwick 3: Chris D’Angelo struck out six but the Crusaders (1-1) made four errors in their first loss of the spring. Odin Garron had Fenwick’s only hit of the game along with an RBI and Anthony Herbert also drove in a run.
Masconomet 4, Ipswich 3: Senior captain Paul Donnelly went the distance and worked around five hits and the Chieftains improved to 2-0. Ryan Corcoran doubled and scored for the winners while Chris Porfido had two doubles with an RBI. Tyler Feldberg had a hit with an RBI and sophomore Cal Weidman had a hit and scored.
Marblehead 4, Manchester Essex 2: Senior Chris Cannuscio threw five strong innings and had two different RBI singles as the Magicians (1-0) broke the game open in the fifth. Freshman Greyson Leventhal’s sac fly drove home sophomore Graham Tips. Jake Scogland had a hit for Marblehead, Charlie Sachs had a double and Stafan Shepard scored a run.
BOYS TENNIS
Marblehead 5, Beverly 0: Senior captain Mika Garber (6-0, 6-0), junior captain Etan Farfel (6-1, 6-1), and sophomore TJ Kelley (6-0, 6-1) rolled in singles play for the Magicians, who also got doubles victories from juniors Leo Winocour and captain Jayden Janock (6-2, 6-0), as well as junior Anthony Vizy and, in his varsity debut, freshman Alex Boehning (6-3, 6-1).
Winthrop 3, Salem 2: The Witches got clutch victories from Rylan Workman at first singles (6-4, 6-4) and the second doubles team of Austin Ryan and William Towne (6-3, 7-5). In addition, freshman Finn Hangar had a terrific match at second singles.
St. John’s Prep 5, Xaverian 0: The Eagles went on the road to Westwood and returned home with a season opening win. John DeAngelis (6-0, 4-6, 10-3), Jack Prokopis (6-1, 6-1) and Luke Free (6-0, 6-0) each prevailed in singles, with the doubles tandems of Luke Prokopis and Boris Kouzminov (6-2, 6-1), and Mark McDuffee and Alex Melville (6-0, 6-0) doing the same.
BOYS TRACK
Danvers 103, Saugus 33: Noah Wade (shot put, discus), Zach Cotter (high hurdles, low hurdles), Luke Tirella (high jump, long jump), Bryce Kassiotis (400, 4×400 relay) and Will Conklin (800, 2-mile) were all double winners as the Falcons breezed to victory.
GIRLS TRACK
Danvers 74, Saugus 54: The Falcons earned first place finishes from DeAnna Figureido (400 hurdles), Addison Lamar (2-mile), Tess Ryan (100), Lola Smith (mile), Bobbi Serino (800), Sabina Sturgeon (200), and Delia Smith (javelin) to pick up the victory.
BOYS LACROSSE
Essex Tech 11, Peabody 8: Goaltender Damian Biersteker stopped 19 shots and Mason Gadbois scored three goals while assisting on three others as the Hawks pulled away in the fourth quarter for an important nonleague victory. Dominic Tiberii and Timmy Tavares both had two goals and two goals for Essex Tech (2-1), with Fisher Gadbois also scoring twice and Casey Collins (assist) and Chase Ruberti once piece. Armani Booth had two helpers and Hadden Amico won 14-of-23 faceoffs.
Marblehead 6, Beverly 5: The Magicians won their 62nd straight Northeastern Conference game with two fourth quarter goals to survive a score at home. Gio Garibotto finished with two goals, as did Jack Whipple, who netted the game-winner in the fourth quarter. Cam Waldman and Charlie Grenier each had one, with Drew Nelson, Sean Dolan, Will Sullivan, Reece Moore and Waldman picking up assists. Finn Gallup made three saves in net.
Connor Wallace netted three goals for Beverly (0-3) and John Maloblocki had the other two along with an assist. Brendan McCarron, Brian Kessel and Bobby Massa each had one assist and netminder Colby Vaccaro stopped a dozen shots.
Masconomet 11, Danvers 8: Owen McNally finished with six points, including three goals, while Colten Russo and Anthony Giacchino each had two goals and one helper for the victorious Chieftains, who snapped a tie game with five goals in the final quarter. Colin Driscoll added two more goals, with John Miga (goal, assist), Will Carey (goal) and Madden Bernier (2 assists) also reaching the scoresheet. Tyler Goncalves (6 saves) and Jack Wheadon (5 saves) got the job done in net.
Evan Roach won 15-of-23 faceoffs for Danvers, whos scoring came from Jake Ryan (2 goals, assist), Sean Rivard (2 goals, assist), Cooper Dunham (2 goals, assist), Tommy Cyr (goal, 3 assists) and Brady Tersolo (goal, assist). Lincoln Smith made seven saves in the first half, with Ryan Rogers making another seven over the final two quarters.
Swampscott 8, Winthrop 5: Great defense, particularly in the second and third quarters, was a huge reason why the Big Blue earned the victory. Sam Brodsky scooped a multitude of ground balls and helped lead the clears for the winners, who got strong faceoff work from both Carson Palmer (2 goals) and freshman Luke Michigan. Other goal scorers included Jack Hazell (2), Chase Russo, Liam Keaney, John Von Barta, and Max Field, with Drew McCathern, Von Barta and Keaney each contributing an assist.
Pingree 13, Brooks 3: Christian Renaud powered the offense with a career best 3-goal, 3-assist performance to get the Highlanders (2-2) off and running. Jake Hiltz had two goals and one assist; Finley McClintock scored twice and won eight faceoffs; Connor O’Neill added a goal and two assists; and Ryan Kavanagh finished with a goal and one helper. Matt Tersolo, Nick Donovan, Quinn Donovan and Bodie Cannata also had goals, with Teddy Whipple picking up one assist and goalies Max Becker (6 saves) and Marco Mottolla (3 saves) both playing well.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Swampscott 16, Winthrop 1: Senior standout Coco Clopton recorded her 200th career point, finishing the day with four goals and two assists, to give the Big Blue a convincing road win. Victoria Pierro finished with two goals and two assists for the winners; Avery Laundry, Cecilia Tripp and Sophia Ciccioti each added two goals and an assist; and Mia Dahlman also scoring twice. Fiona Keaney and Samantha Demady both added solo tallies, and goalie Samantha Demady finished with four saves.
Essex Tech 8, North Reading 4: The Hawks earned their first victory as a Cape Ann League member school as Sydney Mace paced a balanced attack with two goals. Morgan Costa added a goal and two assists, with Bella Vetrano, Gabby Adie, Liv Isidro, Janelle Dalton (6 draw controls), and Carrie Martinez also scoring. Emerson Adams contributed one assist, goalie Kemberly Jean Louis stopped four shots and had seven ground balls, and as a team Essex Tech (now 1-2) had seven caused turnovers.
Masconomet 11, Danvers 8: Hannah Coleman scored her 100th career goal and also won her 100th career draw to power the Chieftains. Coleman had five goals in all and Violet Malinowski scored twice for Masco. Goalie Megan McGinnity was tremendous in net for Danvers with 19 saves while Jordan Turcotte scored four times, Maddy Chase had two and Abigail Sullivan also scored.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Greater Lowell 3, Salem 0: Setter Kaiden Brewster had three kills and two aces to lead the Witches, who fell by scores of 22-25, 17-25, 16-25.
BC High 3, St. John’s Prep 1: Despite 20 kills from Jayden Pelletier and 13 digs from George Dauphin, the Eagles were bested, 20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-27.
SOFTBALL
Peabody 4, St. Paul’s 2: The Tanners began the season with a road win in Worcester as Abby Bettencourt struck out eight in a complete game effort. She had two doubles and scored twice while captain Logan Lomasney had two RBI including a first inning double. Freshman catcher Kaylee DiNicola came up with a 2-out, 2-run double late in the game and Lizzy Bettencourt, JJ Emerson and Kiley Doolin all had critical hits.
Beverly 8, Wayland 4: Sophia Balducci and Gabbi Wickeri each drove in two runs and the Panthers (2-0) scored three in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good. Wickeri and Lidia Miedema combined for six strikeouts in the circle with the freshman earning the win by shutting Wayland out for the last 2 2/3 innings. Ella Campos added a double.
Gloucester 11, Masconomet 7: The Chieftains had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with a chance to win it but couldn’t, and Gloucester took advance in extra innings by plating four runs in the top of the eighth.
Amesbury 10, Ipswich 0: Senior captain Annabel Morris went the distance in the circle for the Tigers, finishing with six strikeouts.
Manchester Essex 4, Hamilton-Wenham 3: Viola Fazio went 4-for-4 while Molly Degnan (2 RBI) and Bella Fazio had hits but the Generals (0-1) couldn’t complete the comeback in the top of the seventh. Pitcher Ava Day threw the complete game and struck out eight.
Marblehead 9, Reading 3: Tessa Francis struck out 12 in a 2-hitter and the Magician offense came alive as they earned the first win of the season.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Salem State 8, Bridgewater State 7: Antonio Belgrove drove home the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth and Kyle Banche threw the final 2 2/3 innings to pick up the win as Salem State improved to 11-7. Mark Smith and Nolan Currier each went 3-for-4 in the winning effort and Yadbriel Gonzalez had two hits and scored the winning run.
Scots drop pair: Gordon fell to Roger Williams, 5-3 and 7-2, to dip to 5-19 on the season. Jonathan McIntyre, Andrew Hartman and Alex Razzabini all had multi-hit efforts for the Scots.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Gordon swept: Nichols shaded Gordon in both ends of a double header, 3-2 and 1-0. Gordon was limited to just seven hits between the two games and got solid pitching from Emily Graham and Sierra Ricci, who both threw all six innings and scattered four hits each.
