GIRLS BASKETBALL
Hamilton-Wenham 55, Bristol County 19: Jumping out to a fast 21-3 lead after one quarter enabled the Generals to cruise to a Division 4 preliminary round playoff victory on their home court. Sasha Makogonov scored 13 points for H-W, which led 37-6 at halftime. In all, 13 different players scored for the winners, all contributing between two and six points. The Generals will now hit the road to Western Mass. to face 14th seeded Easthampton on Thursday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Boston Latin 57, St. John’s Prep 54 (OT): For the second straight season, a six-win Eagles team was knocked out in a Division 1 preliminary round bout at home. St. John’s led by nine at halftime before the Wolfpack rallied to take the lead with the Prep tying things up with 59 seconds to go (48-48).
Springfield International Charter 64, Swampscott 62: In a thrilling Division 4 tourney opener, the Big Blue got the game tied with 5.7 seconds remaining but Springfield made a tough pass the length of the floor and won with a buzzer-beater. Connor Chiarello had 30 points for Swampscott (12-9) while Liam Wales had 18 and Jake Collins added eight.
“I’m proud of the way our guys battled all game and never let up. They left it all on the court,” Big Blue coach Jason Knowles said.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Salem State 7, Gordon 4: Brock Pare struck out six and gave up only two hits over six innings to lead the Vikings (1-0) on opening day. Owen Duggan had three RBI on three hits as SSU built a 6-0 lead. Antonio Belgorve also had three hits and James Dolan drove home a pair. Salem native Bobby Jellison fanned three out of the ‘pen.
For Gordon (0-1), Cody Demers had two hits and scored twice.
