METHUEN — A local man who went missing while on vacation was found dead under a South Carolina home Monday.
Stanley Kotowski, 60, had been missing since Friday, Aug. 16, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office in Beaufort, South Carolina.
On Monday, authorities were called to a home in Sea Pines where they later discovered a body believed to be Kotowski. Master Sgt. Danny Allen said deputies in the area were called to the scene.
Kotowski and his family were vacationing in the area when he went missing. Allen did not elaborate on the nature of the call that led them to the home.
According to Allen, the body was not easily visible.
“You had to physically go underneath the house,” he said.
The search of Kotowski – in an area with numerous rivers and beaches – had included search dogs, helicopters, drones and boats. Allen said it involved multiple agencies and jurisdictions.
Investigators arrived at a home in Sea Pines at about 11:30 a.m. Monday and the body was recovered from underneath the structure at about 3:30 p.m.
Kotowski was last seen walking away from 226 South Sea Pines Drive, Hilton Head Island, without taking any personal items with him and not wearing shoes. The local coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy Tuesday to determine the manner of death and verify the identity.
More information will be available at a press conference Tuesday, Allen said.
