MARBLEHEAD — Here’s a lesson one Marblehead pup can teach everyone: watch those ocean currents.
The town’s harbormaster was dispatched to the waters off of Greystone Beach early Tuesday afternoon on a report of a dog who went on an unscheduled dive into Salem Sound and ended up a ways off-shore as a result.
Miss Cleo, a Bernese mountain dog, broke free of her yard and made her way to Greystone Beach, when something scared her into jumping in the water, town officials said.
In response, animal control officer Betsy Tufts called Harbormaster Mark Souza, who dispatched a boat to help rescue the pup. She was found struggling against strong currents and windy conditions in roughly 40-degree waters at the time, about 200 yards from shore.
The vessel was able to rescue Miss Cleo and reunite her with her owners, after which she was reported to be cuddled up at home and no worse for wear.
